NFU Mutual - Car or Truck?
Does anyone else have experience of insuring their Disco on a fully-comp basis through NFU Mutual?
I accepted an NFUM quote last year but was subsequently surprised to find my 2016 D4 Graphite described on paperwork as a Light Commercial Vehicle. Only this year, come renewal time, have I discovered that this was because I’d been sold a Light Commercial Vehicle Policy (I know, that penny should have dropped much earlier!). Cover is similar to their Car Insurance policy but there are key differences – e.g. no cover for driving other vehicles, public liability cover a quarter of the £20m more normally associated with private car policies etc. etc..
NFUM (or at least my local branch) tell me that they don’t offer cover on Land Rover Discoverys under their Car Insurance policy. I wondered whether anyone here had encountered the same issue?

I was with NFU for years for my D3 & D4, couple of years of that with both of them together. Both as cars. You might try a different branch or their head office/central lot.

Why would they not insure Discoverys?
They have to be pretty common amongst their (wealthier) farmer/country set user base, surely?
I joined NFU many years ago specifically to insure my 110 (pre-Defender) as they were much cheaper than anyone else, and they were more than happy to move that over to the 200 TDi Discovery when I bought that.
As far as I know that was a car policy, not light commercial. I know I had all the bells and whistle I had with my previous insurer.
I liked their relaxed attitude to modifications.
Tow bar - does it make it go faster? No, then not bothered.
Winter wheels - does it make it go faster? No, then not bothered.
FBH - does it make it go faster? No, then... you get the drift.
I moved away from NFU as they could not insure the VW Caravelle I subsequently bought (as not listed) but was thinking about trying them again for the D4.
Irritates me in this day and age that you can't get a quote on-line from them though, but will hit the phone later. Central number, not local agent.
Might be worth trying them?

I have never understood why NFU would insure my dad’s Defender is South East London, yet living in Cornwall, one street from open fields, apparently I don’t live in a rural enough location when I have twice tried to get quotes from them.Andy

My policy kicked off near Usk, very rural, followed me to Grantoon, large village rural/protourban and then Comham, most deffo suburban. No rhyme or reason to it but it seems once you’re in you’re on the list, so to speak.

You've answered your own question, to many rural claims % wise, introduced about 3 years ago, they are not the cheapest but are very reliable on claims, not like some that only cover the windscreen for £75 It can when others can't,

Talking of windscreens, they did put a genuine LR one on the D3. Sadly it got left with the car.

It's probably because the NFU brokers are agents, in effect franchisees, and pick and choose which policies to take on and which to not.Richard

Which is a real shame. Their product & cust serv is superb, just shame it’s such a lottery to purchase it.

The NFU have been exemplary in insuring my Fatty. By far the cheapest, the easiest to deal with and above all, the best level of cover. Meanwhile, my only claims experience (on a windscreen) was superb

My previous D4 and my current D5 are insured by NFU. I can get cheaper quotes but if I ask if they will cover me whilst driving off-road (e.g. crossing farmland for work) the answer is no. NFU provide full off-road use cover (but they do specify that I can't carry more than 2000 rounds of ammunition at a time )MY2022 D5 HSE D300 - with extra nice bits added
MY2019 D5 HSE 3.0 SDV6 - sold to a dealer for a crazy price! - So good I bought another!
