How they nick keyless entry cars.

Just read something on the net about how they nick your keyless entry car.

The thief stands near your car with a radio relay device while his accomplice gets close to you with a matching radio relay device as you sit drinking your latte. Basically, as the relay boxes communicate your key is fooled into thinking it is close to the car while the car is fooled into thinking the key is close to it. Car thief climbs in, presses the button and off he goes.

Apparently if you're clever enough you can buy the bits to make the kit for under a hundred quid.

Maybe a foil lined key pouch would be a good idea?

Always wondered if this keyless mallarkie would end in tears!! It just seems technology for the sake of it, s'pose keeps stealers in work when it all goes wrong, which it will!

Would the engine not stop when it eventually gets out of range of the key / relay?

I don't believe so. Once its started you can throw the key out of the window and drive as far as you like as long as you don't turn it off

does it not work on random verified codes between the fob relay and the receiver? The 'grabber' may collect the code as it's transmitted between the car and fob on request...ie when button pushed or hand around the handle as per renaults. The next action of starting requires another verification between fob and receiver. So unless the 'grabber' unit actually gets the full coding and not the actual transmitted code it cannot communicate and give a positive action.

Some of the older alarms, garage door openers and the like were single channel codes and easily 'grabbed' I thought that was not possible with new systems.

From what I understand it isn't grabbing a code.

The relay box they have near your car picks up the signal your car is sending to the key and sends it to the relay box that is near you (and your key). The key picks up the signal and thinks it is close to the car so sends its signal back to the car via the two relay boxes. The car receives the code and unlocks. All you need to do is get in and press the starter button.

Apparently it is the University of Geneva who have been mucking about with this and reckon it will work up to a kilometre away (whatever distance if their relay boxes are powerful enough) and worked on eight out of ten makes of car they tried.

Given a choice (which I am not by the know-all manufacturers) I would prefer to press a button on a fob in my pocket than have to get a key-less signalling device out of its lead-lined box. I'm OK the keyless entry system only comes as standard in the UK on the HSE - we went for the XS with the "extras" that we need

So the Swiss students can do their bit and get frustrated near our motor! LR Discovery 4 XS pulling an Airstream 532 Caravan also own (since new) a 1996 MGF
