Nitrogen tyre fill

Being talking to a chap today who runs nitrogen in his tyres.

1] Says the ride is softer but without adversly affecting handling.

2] Says pressures don't fluctuate as with air - ie hot & cold.

3] And is more dense so doesn't escape as easy as air.

4] Also says that [he heard] tyres are expected to last 30% longer ??

5] £2.50 per tyre fill, but cheaper than air in the long run

Anyone any comments / experience ??

Thumbs Up

quikfit will automatically fill your tyres with nitro at £2.50 a go unless you specify otherwise... Shocked

have had the AT2's on it since bought, not really noticed any difference to be honest...

Costco tyre bays have been filling tyres with nitrogen for a while.

The tyres may last longer ? i.e. the rubber does not deteriorate as quick, but they are probably only good for the same amount of miles

I asked a Costco tyre fitter what would I use if I needed to top up or increase pressures for any reason, his answer was normal air, so I don't see the benefit

I have never noticed any difference in use, and can't believe all the claims

Ron did he not mention that F1 cars use it so the tyres run cooler Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes as that's one I was told

Ron,

Total b Censored cks I'm afraid Air is denser than Nitrogen because the other main constituent Oxygen is denser than N2. (1)

You are only likely to see the effects of the difference between air and N2 in a laboratory not on the tires on your car.(2 & 3)

4 Total b Censored cks Wear happens from outside in ??

5 is a good reason to tell you the other 4, sounds like a clever entrepeneur. Thumbs Up

The Nissan GTR specification is that it must be filled with Nitrogen.

Personally I can't see it making any significant difference on a D3.

Mick,
Couldn't make the original short cut work, try this http://www.theaa.com/motoring_advice/safet...rogen.html

Planes and racing car uses, we wouldn't be able to notice any changes except a little lighter wallet IMHO..

Not much point to it here in Aus,
I regularly deflate tyres to drive on either Beaches or in the Bush, don't carry a Nitrogen tank to refill!

Must try this for the craic, Neutral

we use our own nitrogen at the factory, produced on site.

A note on nitrogen production:( in our plant )
Its generated using a filter system basiscally, the nitrogen molecule is largest in the air make up and so is trapped in a set of filters fed from a compressor, so a vessel is drained trough a filter, anything left in it is Nitrogen, as all the other air component gases can drain out throught the filters.

so perhaps there is some weight to the theory that nitrogen will be less likely to leak out, as its a larger molecule, as for the other stuff, i can't say. Sheep

BB,
On a very small level that must be true. The guy who spoke to Ron had it the wrong way round larger molecules less dense not denser but I don't think any of us would notice any benefits. However if it is free....fill your boots.... Thumbs Up

seem to remember that has something to do with the tyre keeping the same pressure whatever the heat of the tyre was. ie after smoking it for a while the pressure would not increase/ decrease.

dont recall it ever having anything to do with longevity or the like..

Have to agree with you there Ady. Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

You can see in extreme situations where mosture that is present in the air we fill our tyres up with can be a problem in either extreme cold or heat but not life expectancy of the tyre. Certainly not that we could see.
