No more “Fire Engine” jokes now !
Because in the middle of the night, my car turned into an actual Fire Engine (sort of)
I got a call from a friend who is a retained firefighter, to be told they were stuck in the snow about 3 miles from me, on the way to a call and if it was safe to do so, could I help.
The whole of our region is under a Red snow warning, but I made my way in darkness, near zero visibility and 3 foot drifts to pick up 4 firefighters and mobile equipment while the rest of the crew waited for a snow plough
After ferrying them to the fire (unfortunately it turned out to be another friends house) I returned to the engine as they needed breathing equipment
In the meantime the farmer had managed to clear enough of the road and the blizzard had subsided enough that the engine driver thought he could have a go at getting through, which luckily turned out to be the case.
It’s the first year in 8 that I haven’t had winter tyres or ATRs, but the Discovery (on Pirelli Verde all weathers) performed brilliantly, transporting 5 adults and heavy equipment in horrendous conditions.
While not great, the fire damage to the house isn’t as bad as it might be and everyone is safe which is the main thing.
So no more “fire engine” jokes please ]

I don't know if they have chains Russell, but quite honestly with the size of the drifts ahead of them I don't think they would have helped.
It was just fortunate that I was coming from a slightly more sheltered direction where the drifts weren't as deep. I got to within about 300-400 metres of where they'd got to, so we didn't have to shift the equipment too far"Better to remain silent and be thought a fool, than to speak out and remove all doubt" ?.....what rubbish...

Very impressed with the Verdes in poor conditions. On virgin snow, probably varying between 6-18 inches, the treads didn't fill with snow and not once did I/they lose traction or drive. Even when I hit bigger drifts they didn't struggle. I was bit concerned at getting turned in the drifts, but I shouldn't have been.

I thought (and only after seeing stuff on here if I'm honest) that a good snow-capable tyre was designed so the threads did fill with snow ?
or are you saying they were good despite that not happening ?.

I can only comment on what I've experienced previously.I had Grabbers on the last time we had snow of this type, deep and powdery, and the treads filled up which reduced traction.....I never got stuck and they did the job though.
I know the GG is an ATR and as such isn't a dedicated snow tyre, but I was just struck about how much better the All-weather Verdes performed compared to my expectations. "Better to remain silent and be thought a fool, than to speak out and remove all doubt" ?.....what rubbish...
