No gear change when lights on!

With headlights switched on the auto box will not change up a gear unless in manual mode, the brake lights are on constantly (foot nowhere near pedal). The tailgate will not open now, having been fine earlier. All this after 3 hour journey home from dealer - so thinking battery not the cause? Confidence gone already in 2006 S Auto Sad Any suggestions?

Could be a faulty brake lamp switch. Which dealer?

Everything is fine until lights are switched on plus we had the usual array of transmission warning lights 20 mins into the journey which we cleared by restarting. The tailgate will not work any which way.

Without knowing the history, its difficult to say. Are your brake light bulbs in the right way round? There is some really weird Censored occuring when the bulbs are not fitted correctly.

Give us some more details, and I'm sure the vast knowledge on here will bear fruit Thumbs Up

I recently changed a brake light bulb then noticed that it stayed on constantly when all the lights were switched on. Took bulb out, reinserted it and it's been fine since. Couldn't figure out what I'd done wrong the first time, but the brake lights do seem to cause some strange problems with the D3!

Thanks for the replies guys. But can the brake lights and/or headlights affect the auto gearbox? I am incredulous if they can...

I don't know, but if the brake circuit is always on when the lights are on, it might be that the car thinks you're braking, and so will not change up, no matter what the engine speed or throttle does?

I had a similar thing on mine, even though mine is a manual, the car went into 'limp home mode', and would not allow me to accelerate over 2,000rpm, called Landrover assistance, and he straight away removed the brake bulb, turned it through 180 degrees, and it all worked again fine. He said if the car thinks the brakes are on all the time it automatically prevents you driving at speed to prevent any damage to engine, etc. Again mine only happened with the headlights on.

The brake light holder should only let you put the globe in one way.
As there are offset location pins on the sides of the globe.
Are you using the correct globe Question

tailgate problem probably due to tailgate release wiring being unplugged or damaged. You need to remove the trim from the lower edge of the upper tailgate on the inside where you'll find a multipin connector. Check that this is connected properly. If you use the site search for how to fit a rear ladder you'll find more on this problem.
I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.

Just maybe the tailgate malfunction, and the other issues are linked. The tailgate and the brake lights have one thing in common - they are at the rear of the car. It would not be beyond the realms of possibility that you have some wiring damaged or trapped somewhere. Anyway, I would be taking it back to the dealer.

On mine if you push the brake pedal at all then the car won't allow any throttle input (may inhibit the auto changing too but you can't tell), so I would think the brake pedal switch is probably OK, unless it has decided the switch is duff by other means and is allowing throttle but inhibits gearchange. Cars are too clever by half these days....
 Cheers

I Suppose if you took the brake light bulbs out, and tried the rest of the lights and gear change, it would tell you if the bulbs where the culprit
