No Joy on starting attempts |
|
Well, here we go again.
A couple weeks back I had some troubles with my battery. This is a new battery, so a little surprised that how quick it drained. The key was off all week with no known drains.
Now yesterday I had charged the battery, 2amps, for 36 hrs or more. Couldn't find my multi meter for testing voltage.
When the key is turned you can here a click but no starter engagement. When attempting to start as mentioned, the vehicle was difficult to start. I put this on the battery/alternator. I have tested the alternator when the car is running, and get 14-15volts at idle, so the alternator is fit it seems.
My next guess is that the starter solenoid or starter has failed.
I saw a video online where they test the starter by jumper wire across the relay pole. Where is the relay? and is this something that could possibly muddle something else up, by jumping the relay?
And is the starter does turn or start the vehicle, what does that mean?
Also if it does not start the vehicle, I assume that means the starter or solenoid is knackered. Is this so? 2005 Land Rover D3, 4.4L V8, Maya Gold Metallic

Earth damaged? Stick a jump lead from negative terminal to decent engine earth point and try again.

Starter relay is in the fuse box by the battery.
Marked SM on the cover
Yes bridge it or swap it with another
The relay is a common fault and cheap/easy part to replace.
Is this an intermittent fault ? It’s not clear

I would say, that it was a degrading situation. Started out with just a "what happened to the battery?" Thought I had a parasitic draw, but to go from 100% to not able to start the truck at all over nite.
I have charged and tried to start immediately after it finished charging for two days, and it will not start at all. I'll try the relay first.

Well unfortunately I switched relays, and the car didn't start nor turn over.
I can here the relay and I think the bendix hit, but it doesn't turn over. Will try to look at the grounds but I recently cleaned all the ground under the right front fender about 2 months ago.
I think I am in for the starter change unfortunately. Are the V8' gas ones 4.4 any easier to get the starter out? I'm seeing some nightmare posts I guess on that subject. 2005 Land Rover D3, 4.4L V8, Maya Gold Metallic

Yeah. Sounds like starter needs lookin at
Don’t know how difficult they are to remove.
Don’t forget the screwdriver trick between 2 + terminals first

So today I got all the big boy tools out and was ready to tackle removing the starter to at least get it tested. First, I figured I would go ahead and look at the connection (+) on the starter, since it would need removed anyway at some point, so it seemed like good practice. If you have ever put a starter nut on an older car, you know what I mean, that copper nut on the old ones would strip in a heartbeat. Anyway, decided to brush clean them but it didn't look bad at all, a small spot of rust, winch I had taken picture, because I would have thought there was any way that would not allow connection, but it did.
I went ahead after cleaning and putting some di electric grease on, and tightened the nut up.
Found the key and boom, it started right up. I recycled it about 3 times, then let run to check charging voltage, 15.02V.
Tomorrow I plan to put some Dr Lube in the tranny to see it it will fix the clack I have going on.
Fix head liner as best I can, and get her inspected. I think it might be time to decide, new transmission, or let the beast go. 2005 Land Rover D3, 4.4L V8, Maya Gold Metallic

I had similar intermittent symptoms and after tapping, the starter "woke" up. As much as I like crawling under "Tony" with an hammer, I thought better to change the starter (17 years old).
I ordered a refurbished one and my Indy should swap it in soon.
Cheers,

So still having issues, finally took the ground off the motor mount to try to make sure it was not that, and went ahead and pulled the old starter. The trouble is that when I took the small black and red wire terminal off the old starter the locking clip broke. I've wedged it in as best as possible and I think it is fully engaged however with 11.58V on the battery I am getting nothing out of the new starter.
Took the old starter in for a core and had it tested. It was defective for sure as it not only didn't work but spewed a large spark off the tester.
I have the battery unhooked and on charge and will try it again tomorrow I'm bushed.
With that said if it does come to life tomorrow, what do I check. 2005 Land Rover D3, 4.4L V8, Maya Gold Metallic

I had this on a D4 after the engine siezed, the starter motor had blown the mega fuse built into the positive battery terminal. I dont know if your D3 has the same but its woth a look. Andrew

So I went back under as I was suspect of the ground connection that terminates on the engine mount on the right side PASS NAS. I found a suitable ground point on the engine block already tapped as the original position was stripped out.
So everything sound? I jumped the relay and the starter engaged and turned the engine. As the key was off it didn't start.
Next with key in position II and the same result, starter engages turns over engine upon jumper wire across 3 - 5 (i.e. 30 - 87?) 2005 Land Rover D3, 4.4L V8, Maya Gold Metallic

I think you need to be more specific in your details
Does engine crank on the key?
If not are you trying to fool it by making it crank with a jumper wire?
If so maybe the car wont try and crank as it can see an issue, ie in gear/immobiliser issue etc.
Some vehicles will crank even with an immobiliser issue, other wont crank at all, some will even start then die straight away when they see there is an issue.

So what I had was a bad starter, confirmed by Parts store test, while I witnessed.
So placed the new starter, and tried to start her up after charging the battery overenight. Still would not turn over, in that the starter did not engage the gear nor did it try to turn the motor.
To check the wiring from the relay to the starter itself, there by cutting things out like immobilizers, neutral switches or position switches, and the starter did its job, while using a jumper wire but not with the key.
So the issue lies in the sensors or wiring before the charge goes across the relay to turn the starter.
What is the "work flow" from the ignition to the relay? the problem lies here and not in the starter now.
When the car ran some weeks before the alternator was functioning correctly and was putting out over 14v when at idle with partially charged battery.
So now I am in the what is the next thing to do here. As soon as the rain stops I will take a look at the gear leaver cable picot point, lube and or order the parts to renew.
So looking for what I would need to do next.
This all started as my key fob began not to work, then the battery kept discharging; as in electrical leak.
All fuses and stuff up top seems to be working fine, Fuse 40amp, and relay are working as they should. 2005 Land Rover D3, 4.4L V8, Maya Gold Metallic
