Noco GB70? Or other jump start batteries

My 2013 D4 wouldn’t start this morning, without the help of a little power boost from an old motorbike battery I had in the garage.

I’m not sure why, it had only been sat for a couple of days and prior to that lots of long drives - so I’m guessing my battery maybe on the way out. Having tried several times to start it before I started problem solving - by the time I got the multimeter on the battery it was down to 11.8v although once started, it was showing 14v +

It’s going to be sat in an airport car park for a week shortly, and I’m already assuming that it’ll be knackered by the time I get back, so was thinking of getting one of th NOCO battery boosters, probably a GB70 as a get me home measure but they’re not cheap - a whole new battery would probably be cheaper.

Has anyone had one? Used one? Knows of the best place to get one? I’ve never had one before but I’ve seen the NOCO ones at my local auction and so assume they must be decent as they’re always boosting cars which have been sat a while.

Secondly, does anyone know a simple and foolproof way to know if the batter is shagged, just using a multimeter?

How old is the battery? In my experience you can expect anything from 3-5 years life for a Disco battery, so if yours is original I would consider replacement.

Having said that I believe that it's worth carrying a NOCO Boost HD or similar.

Good luck

I have one of these, as do a few of the guys on the RRS forum. It's a great bit of kit...

Thanks guys, I have no idea how old the battery is, but I guess it’s the original, so I’ll get that swapped shortly, not in time for this trip though and so now the decision which booster to get. I like the look of the GB150 but it’s over £200+

Buy cheap and pay twice? Our jump in at the deep end and just get the pricey one? Decisions decisions....!

Thanks all!

I bought one of these a few years ago - never had to use it on the D4 but it did start an E30 BMW that had been sittng for a couple of years. Peace of mind to carry in the boot, but you do have to recharge every now and again.

Bite the bullet and get the GB150, it certainly does the job. No point buying GB70 only to find when you need it that it’s not up to it.

Cheaper to buy a new battery, 7 years is good for a battery Thumbs Up
