Noise from ABS pump at 10MPH - initialising? |
|
I've had a poke around some old threads, but couldn't really find an answer to this. I find that just after starting the car, when it gets to around 10 MPH there is a noise from the ABS pump - just a brief grinding noise as if the traction control was kicking in. Something tells me this is normal and it's some kind of initialisation of the ABS system?
Also, since having work done on the OSR brake after it stuck on a couple of months ago, I frequently get in the car and the brake pedal is rock hard - to the point I worry that I won't be able to depress it enough to start the vehicle (but thankfully it does). I should point out that this can happen at random, either on a cold start, or literally if you've gone into the shop for 2 minutes and come back, it can be stiff then.
Combine the above with my ongoing suspension issues and now the fact my rotary gear selector is refusing to lift, it's proving to be a great day out! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I don't suppose anyone has any ideas on this please? It is still an issue and sometimes you can even feel it through the accelerator pedal, as if the traction control is briefly kicking in. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If you have access to the needed equipment I would advise looking at the wheel speed sensors as a starting point (after looking at any stored fault codes)
If you can watch the speed sensor signals as you go from say 0-20mph, hopefully you will see a mismatch and that will be your clue for where to start looking.
Wild guess- a damaged and reluctor ring.
As for the hard brake pedal, D3's had an issue with the servo filling with oil from the vacuum pump, it causes close to what you have described, but I thought they had sorted it by the time the D4 came out
If you want to check pop off the vacuum pipe from the servo and use something like a tie wrap as make shift dip stick and see if there's oil in the bottom.

Thanks for the quick response, in January last year I had a new O/S/R ABS sensor and I'm sure it's since then that it's been a problem.
I'm convinced that if I fix this, it'll fix the ride quality issue, as that started getting bad after that ABS sensor was replaced and the ride seems OK before that 'buzz' from the ABS pump.
I have got an IID tool, but I'm sure it says somewhere that you cannot use it plugged in for long, or when driving. Is that more of a safety thing do you think?
Thanks again ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I don't have experience with IID tool, but watching "live data" should be an option on all diagnostic equipment other than a really basic code reader.
Having to monitor live values while driving is a relatively common practice.
It may be worth looking at the reluctor ring on the corner you've had replaced in case the issue was with the ring all along, the ring can crack and start to come slightly adrift causing the sensor to misread.
