Peculiar Parking Sensor Issue (PDC)

Hello, I have read numerous posts regarding PDC issues, but I can't find any answers for the issue I seem to have...
I have never had the PDC working since I bought the car (D3 '05 HSE Auto) in March. Initially I had a warning on the display 'Front Parking Distance Aid Inactive'. I replaced one of the front non-clicking sensors and also had a garage look at the issue. They garage got rid of the warning (software update I think), and even after replacing the other three front sensors still had no luck. The sensors bleep at me regardless of any obstacles and also when driving at low speed. I have now resorted to turning off the PDC every time I start the car.

I have had the front bumper off and done a continuity check and inspected the wiring loom for any chaffing.

I have noticed that the sensors appear to work when either in R or D with the ignition on and brake off. I can walk around the car and the front and rear sensors bleep as and when they should. However, if I start the engine the sensors return back to crazy mode and bleep constantly regardless of obstacles.

What difference is the engine running making???

I am starting to loose my sense of humour and I don't want to give my ol' man any more ammo as he drives a Land Cruiser (and so did I until I bought this Disco) Shocked

Any suggestions/tips greatly appreciated

I heard this before on here.
The electrical noise from the alternator is upsetting one of the front ones.

Buy a couple and swap out if it’s easy to repeat
Sounds like you need an assistant n the car and some chocks would be a good idea

Thanks for the reply. I've had all four front sensors replaced so unless the 'noise' is still affecting one of the new ones???

Do you know which thread discussed the electrical noise?

It can happen on new ones.

Do you know if the previous owner changed the Alternator?

I had this and other small electrical problems on my 55 D3 HSE when I replaced the Alternator with a cheap rebuilt one off Ebay.

Swapping it out again for a new genuine LR one sorted it and the other issues.

Luckily the original vendor took theirs back and gave me a full refund.

I had a theory that a stray EMC emission from the badly rebuilt Alternator was effecting the CANBUS signal via one of the ECUs that live in the engine bay.

Nasher.

I’ve got some vehicle history but I don’t see anything about a replacement alternator however I’ll have a look underneath the bonnet. Thanks for the replies

Keep us posted on this, I have the same issue and am keen to see how you get on. Diagnostic tool (icarsoft LRII) didn’t give me any clues either.

Good luck!

Had a look at the alternator, it’s a Denso (see pic). Are they genuine LR as I didn’t see any logo?
I’m not sure if it’s related (I hope it is). I noticed a while ago that there looked like an earthing cable missing from around the transmission area. I bought a replacement but I noticed the cable’s label description is an RFI suppression cable! Could this cable be the answer? And more importantly where does it fit, it looks like it takes M8 screws, but I’ve looked around the tranny and can’t see any thing obvious? Any pointers???

Hiya

It says the cable is from the transfer box to body , alas doesn’t show it in the picture of exact location

Maybe it uses one of the transfer box casing bolts

I have had a problem on another vehicle which turned out to be a poor engine earthing causing feedback through the engine loom to the ecu.
Adding extra earth wires solved my issue and wont cause any harm to you vehicle, you can buy braded straps from halfords in varying lengths. They just need to attach to a bolt on the engine and a good earth point on the chassis.

If you want to rule it out you can use a jump lead from the engine to the negative battery terminal.

Thanks for the pic, the orientation of the cable might be clue...

Any feedback on the Denso alternator??? The genuine article or an after market replacement?

That looks like the correct alternator. The same markings as the Denso one on Advanced Factors website.(DAN987)
