Noise from the front end
Hi I'm wondering if anyone can help me? I've got a Land Rover Discovery 3 automatic on a 08 plate with 140000 miles, I've got a weird noise coming from the front end bit of a whining noise, only when I take my foot off the accelerator!! Or coasting down a hill, as soon as I touch the accelerator the noise seemed to go!! Ive Jack the front end up and spun the wheels up by hand and there seem to be no play or noises from the front wheel bearings!! The car is driving superb gearbox working fine no issues part from this weird noise!! Please help??

Is the noise more obvious at town speeds passing parked cars/buildings etc?
If so search for noisy torque convertor.

Hi thanks for the reply, no the noise seems to be worse faster I go and then let go of the accelerator, you can hear it at low speeds but not as loud? And you can only hear it when I'm not accelerating

Might be the aircon compressor bearing, easy test, as your driving along and can hear the noise, just press the Econ button on the heating controls, if the noise is still there then I was completely wrong and I will go and sit in the corner David

It sounds suspiciously like the torque converter, my car has similar mileage, I had a slight vibration which I could feel through the foot pedal, after reading as much as I could on the site I tried a couple of tubes of Dr Tranny straight into the gearbox cooler and the vibration has gone. But I didn't have a whining noise.
Have a look here about adding the Dr Tranny as it is very easy using a bit of clean hosepipe.

Thanks I will order some up and try it!! I definitely think it's mechanical and not a split pipe, it's so weird how there is no noise until you let go of the accelerator and as soon as you put the accelerator on again the noise will stop!! I was wondering if it could be a diff issue??

Hi sounds very similar to what I had on my d3 with the same mileage as yours , until a few weeks ago, whining noise on the over run.
Mine was the front diff bearings so I dropped the diff out changed the bearings and what a difference now no more whining.
