Noisy Air Suspension Pump on Start Up |
|
Hiya everyone. New to the forum and the Disco. Ive been searching the site for a while now but can't find the answer to my little issue. Hopefully someone can put my mind at ease!
My Disco3 is making a louder noise than usual on starting. I think its the air suspension pump/compressor. It stays on for between 30 secs and a couple of minutes. It remains noisy if lifting the suspension, but quiet when lowering. Its never done this before, but I had a blow out on Sunday and had to change the wheel. I run 275/40/20 tyres but had to put the 235/70/17 spare on for the journey home from the Lakes to Manchester. I replaced the tyre on Monday.
The pump became noisy once I lowered the jack after putting the spare on. I just presumed it was trying to set itself up properly and level out, but the pump has remained noisy now with the same wheels on all round.
It dosen't seem to have any issues re lifting/levelling etc, its just the noise that's changed.
Any idea's? Should I get worries and get my wallet out!!
Cheers. T

Where did you put the jack when you changed the wheel over? Did you use the proper jacking points in the chassis beams?
Is there any chance that you jacked it up under the compressor cover? If so, you've probably snapped the mounting bracket and/or damaged the compressor.... 2006 Discovery 3 TDV6 SE Auto Buckingham Blue

T - the compressor is fitted in front of the left rear wheel and behind that chassis beam. If you're not used to jacking up the D3 or you are in a rush, it's very easy to put the jack under the compressor cover and lift the car like this.
If the bracket snaps, then the compressor will make a hell of a lot more noise and sound like a bag of spanners.
It's a fairly cheap and easy fix though 2006 Discovery 3 TDV6 SE Auto Buckingham Blue

Cheers for the response guys. You guessed right! It was my rear nearside wheel. I did however use the jack supplied with a little 'nipple' on the end which fitted in a small hole in the correct jacking point. It was making a noise after this, but when I had the new tyre put on, they used a trolley jack in the jacking position, but that did leave a dent in and around the jacking point and wouldn't actually get the Disco high enough to remove the wheel, so we jacked it on the rear axle instead.
If it is the pump cover/bracket, any idea's how to replace it and where to get one from. My mates a top welder if thats an opition!
thanks again lads

Hi T
I haven’t removed the compressor, however from what I have seen, its cover off (remove mud from inside of cover) locate fixings for compressor remove and repair.
I haven’t done this though and I am sure someone else will be along that has done it to advise.
Sorry I can’t help any more.
Replacement bracket from The Large One…..(or weld if can't wait)

Take a look at the first article here which may help you identify it The End

Thanks Slimer. The photo's don't work on my PC, but I get the idea from the text. I'l get the cover off and see if I can repair it and clean the compressor while i'm playing!
You guys are very helpful, what an excellent site. Thanks again

If it was damaged by the tyre fitters then surely you can claim for any damage on their insurance?

Bonehead. Unfortunately they are my mates and were doing me a favour. There just not that good!
I was almost crying when they were using the tyre remover/fitting machine. Its brand new and they hadn't had any 20" rims on before, so mine was a practice session!
You live and learn. Hopefully I'l sort it at weekend. Cheers, T

Fair point I guess
Although if they have insurance it won't cost them anything if you claim. However I know how you feel and I would do the same.
Good luck! I think the compressor if you should need one is expensive

Still not repaired this yet guys, but it was the compressor bracket. I removed the plastic cover and about 5 piece's fell out. Then the compressor fell but I had hold of it! Luckily, the compressor is fine and is in full working order so I have just collect my new parts. Compressor bracket and new plastic cover as mine was cracked.
Should get it sorted on Sunday and it will be £85 in all, well spent. Expensive wheel change, but you live and learn and it could have been worse if the compressor was knackered.
Cheers again all for the advice and informing me of the problem.
