Noisy compressor ..this may be why !

Following the last few off-roading adventures with the disco3 crew, I noticed that my compressor was becoming increasingly noisy during use. I had a chat with 'guru' Slimer Wink and he advised me to take a look in the housing as there may be some deposits from various lands. So here's a short story of what I found.

For those that may not know where the compressor unit is..it's located just inboard of the sill, just in front of the nearside rear wheel. You don't need to jack the vehicle up to gain access to the housing, just set the suspension to off-road height.

Ensure that your vehicle is in Park\Gear and your EPB is on..the super safety conscious amongst you may wish to chock the wheels and use a trolley jack \ axle stands etc... but to be honest you don't really get very much of your body under the vehicle at any time and I personally didn't find this necessary.

The compressor casing is black and around 20 inches long and around 8 inches at it's widest. The casing has upper and lower sections and for the purpose of this exercise I only needed to remove the lower. This is held in place by three 10mm bolts with washers, two are attached to the chassis rail at each end and one up through the centre of the casing. There are also four plastic wedge type fasteners moulded into the casing to further secure the two parts together.

After removing the bolts and unclasping three of the four fastners...I pulled the casing down and was greeted by this. The whole unit was completely caked in mud !

What have we here?...I could just only make out cabling and connectors.

Is this some kind of fossil?

There was even a Triffid trying to sprout !

Both upper and lower casings have a moulded sponge like foam insert. This can be carefully removed if required.

I chose to use a hose to clean the lower casing and foam. Make sure you ring the foam out well and allow to dry as much as possible before replacing on the vehicle.

With the smooth hand of an archaeologist, carefully break away the encased mud. Be very careful not to damage any wiring, pipes or connections

After a good twenty minutes of picking, brushing and blowing out ...I found a compressor !!

The mud you see here is from the upper casing only. I reckon that overall there was at least 1.5kg's in there.

Replace the casing, bolts\ washers and ensure that the clips are all fastened.

My compressor now purrs like a kitten again Very Happy

Following on from DG's post, I took the cover off my compressor this evening and found a similar scene of carnage. Worth doing this as part of the post mudfest checks methinks.

Cheers for the tip DG
I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.
