Northumberland in the Summer

Well assuming we get a summer we were considering a visit to Northumberland. Never ventured that way before. we usually take the caravan to France but due to family problems we need to remain in the Uk this summer, so as we have about 3 weeks thought it may be worth a trip. Fed up of Devon and cornwall and fancy a change.
has anyone got any suggestions as to places worth seeing, must dos, and any recomendations re Caravan Club Cls. we like electric hook up. not bothered about facilities.
We might break the journey in the Dales as we have time so likewise for there also.
Cheers

We stayed at a CL with EHU near Amble a couple of years ago, which was great - nice views, very quiet, spacious, and put the vast number of places to visit within easy reach. This is the one -

Mr Davison,
East House,
Guyzance,
Morpeth.

We would love to return, and did try to get in last year, but they were full, so I would recommend booking quickly depending upon when you want to go, as weekends can be busy.

Nigel.

Northumberland is a good place to go with lots to do and see as above. It's generally pretty quiet as well. There is a decent site in Belford. All fully serviced and within walking distance of the pub. It's just to the south of Belford and not the one in the town centre.

Depending when you are up you may like to do the Kielder 4x4 Safari and get to drive through the private forest tracks of Kielder and raise some money for the Mountain Rescue in the process Thumbs Up

Kielder 4x4 Safari Thumbs Up

Had a seasonal pitch at springhill farm site, north sunderland for 2 years which was great.

Views of bamburgh castle to the north and you could walk into seahouses in 15 minutes.

Good showers, toilet block as well as EHU &wifi.

Also has a small shop and as it has a working farm attached kids loved to see the animals etc..

A few small places to visit whilst there, not day trips or much to do, more a one day drive through with stops for coffee:
Warkworth there's a castle there, Alnmouth ( no castle, nice coffee shop at beach side of village nr toilets, make sure you drive down through the golf course to the beach), Craster ( famous for its kippers, oh and Dunstanburgh castle is a short coastal stroll from there), Seahouses (no castle, just a little coastal village).

Btw, there's a Caravan Club site on Kielder Water - but you are out in the sticks there for towns/shops etc.

Northumberland is my favourite part of the country, my in-laws are from Tynemouth originally so we have spent many holidays up there.

There are miles of good clean beaches along the coast line and fabulous countryside inland.

As Ronp and others mentioned, there is Craster and Dunstanburgh castle, Warkworth, Alnwick, Bamburgh. Holy Island is worth a trip along the causeway (drive passed the big car park on the left.... There is another car park with loos in the village). There is also Belsay Castle and hall, and Cragside in Rothbury which is set in acres of land you can either walk or drive along the trail past the lakes.

For those wondering what the Romans did for us there is plenty to see along Hadrians Wall. Housesteads Roman Fort and Chesters are a couple of places to see.

If castles etc are your thing, then it's probably worth joining English Heritage as there seems to more English Heritage than National Trust sites in that area.

Kielder Forest and lake area is beautiful. I've not tried the safari, but may try and organise this for our next trip up there.

Can't help with caravan sites I'm afraid.

Have a great trip...
