Not a great start

Saw a sparkly new D4 on a Shell Forecourt. AA Fuel van in attendance - owner had just picked car up (12 plate with 50 miles) and brimmed with Unleaded. Big Cry

Didn't start the car so no damage but the kit in the AA van is pretty impressive to deal with this.

Also just goes to show that the tight arsed dealers just give you enough fuel to get off the forecourt Evil or Very Mad

You just need to have the balls and turn around saying "If I've spent £4xxxx on a car with you the least you can do is fill it up to the top, here's the key and off you go...."

That's what I did and I got a full tank of Diesel to drive home in - mind you, that was Yeovil LR Bow down

Top people to do business with as well.

Misfuel device is definitely fitted to MY12. I have the yellow plastic wigdet rattling around in the glove box.

A friend of mine had a similar incident with his new X5.... first time the missus borrowed it for a trip to the shops and she brimmed it with petrol, just before pulling off the forecourt and stopping 100 yds down the road in a cloud of smoke.

£11000 to fix! New engine, new fuel system and tank, and IIRC, a new gearbox (no idea why??). Was away being fixed for 6 weeks. Fortunately for him (or her) the insurance co paid up!

I filled my bmw 525d with petrol drove half a mile and realised my mistake. Switched off and phoned mechanic with forty years experience. Had to move vehicle another quarter mile where he drained the system and topped up with diesel. It started first time and has run cleaner ever since. Now covered another 30000 miles, absolutely first class, excellent power no smoke. Better than before !! Oh by the way BMW said they wanted £3000 to fix. As to an earlier post why would you change a gearbox when it is independent of the engine and fuel system ??

Changed fuel filter two days later total cost £120.00

No idea - hefty gearbox damage seemed unlikely to me too. If you got away with a quick drain and flush, sounds like my buddy may have got stung twice!

From my own experience with BMW 'technicians', they really don't tend to diagnose and fix anything - just swap big black boxes around. A proper mechanic is worth his weight in gold!

Living out here in the country most of us are practical and earn our money hard. We call a spade a spade and don't suffer fools.
I have enjoyed all things mechanical for thirty years and although I don't do myself, I won,t be conned !! My friend recently had an oil leak on his 55 plate petrol RR. He had it recovered to the Landrover dealer who said that the engine was shot ! (quote £14000) He had it moved to an independent who repaired and tested for £85. That was 10000 miles ago, all working fine.

Interesting point about the fuelling device. The owner wasn't around Embarassed but it definitely had a tank of unleaded in it. The AA guy went into a lot of detail about what would happen if it had been started and what would need to have been replaced to not void the warranty.
