not yet another tailgate issue? - super clever person needed

Right gents....

Forgive me but I have searched every thread on this subject and don’t appear to have found the right answer yet... and am looking for a super guru ...

Usual problem with intermittent opening of rear top tailgate...mostly works but sometimes doesn’t which can be super frustrating in the rain... unfortunately I have an 08 D3 with a full rear cage so entry is impossible.....

From the original diagnosis one would assume a sticky tailgate microswitch... so have replaced it with a brand new Ford unit and have soldered it correctly onto the original plug.

The cable was replaced a couple of years ago so it’s not the cable....

The two button release principle doesn’t work.... just keep trying and occasionally you can open it... can hear clicking most of the time..

Presumably it’s therefore a sticky solenoid actuator?? Is there only one as it appears from the advanced factors website there are also a pair of left hand and right hand release levers ....(without looking it’s not clear from the diagram whether these are electro operated)

Anyone help with the diagnosis and the part number I need?

Thanks peeps!

Have you checked the complete length of the wire you attached the new ford unit to? Mine had a a similar problem found the plastic shroud around the old wire had perished and was shorting out

Actuator part number is FUG500010. It's on the diagram but it doesn't appear to be stocked.

It does sound like the actuator has gone weak, which isn't unusual. Big Cry
Try charging the battery to full capacity, then try opening it. The extra voltage just might be enough to trip it. One things for certain, the next time you get it open, you need to either remove the cage or replace the actuator. Wink

After replacing a super lazy actuator,it only managed a couple of tailgate openings before failing,I connected a fishing trace wire direct to the latch with the other end accessible up by the plastic trim cover. In the case of a cargo barrier being fitted, running a Bowden cable [bike brake] to the rear seats by the back doors would be advisable/essential!

Excellent idea and one that I will take up, there is absolutely no way that I could get through from the back presently! Hence I have ordered the relevant bits!
Has anyone ever had a second replacement cable snap? Just wondering whether to replace my cable regardless?

Update and conclusion...

Replaced the actuator with a genuine original part as above ((£38 from Island 4x4) fairly easy fitment

Checked the cable which was replaced 2-3 years ago which is one of the later types and is looking still perfect.... greased the locks and put it all back together...

Now working perfectly and you can hear the difference immediately...so hopefully I should be ok now for a couple of years again! Very Happy

Thanks everyone for all your help and advice again! Bloody brilliant!!!! Very Happy
