Off Road in Monument Valley / Canyon de Chelly

hi guys
mid May, i will be visiting Monument Valley and Canyon de Chelly at the wheel of an LR3.

I have visited these parks quite a few time already but only with in regular cars

Since I will be in a properly equiped LR3, I would like to know what you recommand to do (then not to do) in these destinations off road / on tracks, including overnight stay in the wild (roof tent)

At Canyon de Chelly you can hire a Native guide, which will allow you to drive down into the canyon.

The canyon has great water crossings, plenty of offroad routes, and lot's of incredible native ruins to see.

Monument Valley has the 'official' trail that loops around the main mesas - The drive is 17 miles long of which 13 miles is a one-way loop, and typical times for the full trip are 2 to 4 hours. 15 mph is the nominal speed limit

Access for Land Rover is easy

There are also Native guides that can get you access to other off-road areas - they are usually found around the visitor center, and can be hired to gain access to the more remote off-road locations, closed to general traffic.

You should also contact the editor of Land Rover Lifestyle magazine (LRL).

He's just been out in the Monument Valley area with the LR3 and a roof tent

I did not rent the D3 and I do not know of any to be rented in the area, unfortunatly.

I couldn't find any either.

Last time we went to the U.S. we hired a Jeep Commander.

I wonder if any of our American cousins know where I can hire a LR4 or Range Rover in the Phoenix/Scottsdale area?

Hi

When renting 4x4, you'll certainly notice that one is not allowed to take them off road.

I did rent a few D2, L322 and even a JK Jeep Rubicon (factory fitted with BF Mud tires and such) but was never allowed to take them off tarmac... l=Oo\________/oO=l l:Ool======loO:l

Hi Paul, no not HDR, but indeed sightly digitaly enhanced, though color are hardly modified. The place is wonderfull. Benn there quite a few times and still fall in love with it every time.

There are off-road rental places in Sedona AZ, that do Jeeps specifically for offroad use.

You could take your rental from there up to Canyon de Chelly and Monument Valley - loop back to Grand Canyon, and also enjoy the trails around Sedona and Flagstaff.

Thanks, saw them in Sedona along with the others then the Hummer ones, lots of them in Sedona, a bit to many indeed...

Would you know of any similar ones in Vegas to go visit Death Valley as last time we had some from Hertz though were not covered if we had taken them on the Death Valley tracks...
