Off road newbie

I'm new to 4x4 driving and keen to explore the Disco 3's capability.
Apart from booking onto a LR experience, what's the best way of dipping my toe? Local club (Cheshire) or have a go at some easy Green laning?
I've read conflicting advice about when to use TR or to simply select OR height and low diff etc Shocked

Before I went out in mine on anything softer than tarmac, I had already done a LR Experience half day (was in an Evoque as had one at the time) but also booked a half day 1-2-1 off road training in a D4, to get some tips on how to drive, but also to learn when to use the electronics etc. Did mine at Rockingham but the course was booked through ProTrax. Very knowledgeable guy, who would probably know exactly what your D3 can do, which will help you to relate it to your car. Not cheap, but I found it very useful.

I have no D3/4 off road experience but 30 years with leaf and coil sprung LR. Watching videos of D3/4 vehicles on here and it is completely different!
I would happily go to a P&P site in those but not my D3. Personally I would suggest learning from either LR or someone on this forum before venturing out alone.
I hope this helps?

Best advice I can give you is to go to LR Experience with your vehicle: you will learn its capabilities & limitations and you will have loads of fun while doing so Thumbs Up

if i may say , is never to go greenlaning on ur own , just in case u get into problems , so that if there's someone else there can help u or vice versa

welcome to the new world of off roading , is certainally a buzz and meeting great like minded people along the way Thumbs Up

Thing for me is that the suspension does not have as much travel as leaf/coil? so the electronics work well but the body will rock and lift wheels so it looks unnerving for me so for my first time in D3/4 off roading I would want the confidence of an expert.

Appreciate all the replies!
Been looking at the LR experience days but as I understand it, you don't use your own vehicle?
Is it possible to specify which of the LR range are used?

Yes you can, obviously would be fairly new D4 rather than D3, but suspect most of the instructors are dye in the wool LR 'fans' so would hopefully be able to relate to your vehicle.

D4 will be vanishing from the experience when the 5 arrives in March, so you'll have a job on to get in a D4. Some may keep the odd one like they are with the Defender.

You can do something called a LR Trek day at the Land Rover West Country experience.

Its £150 per vehicle and uses the same routes as the LR Experience. I appreciate its a long way from where you are, but you could make a weekend of it.

You can do something similar in your own vehicle at Land Rover Experience East of England. Have a look at www.lroac.com for full details or call the Centre on 01536772238.
