brilliant.
Can only talk about the gearboxes (although comparing to a friends D4 the 4's are better thans 3's)
but as long as you use the gear selector (and not just D) it engine brakes down hills (no need for HDC in my opinion) and just as much control everywhere else.
Always thought manuals are better off road, oh how i was wrong 2inch Lift, 33inch Cooper STTs, Wheel Spacers, Hidden Champion 9000lbs Winch with recovery points, Full Underbody Protection including Rear Bumper Guard, Rock Sliders, Snorkel, 4x4 screen enabled and Sat Nav on the move (thanks to Bodsy), Discreet LED roof lights, LED work light, BAS Re-map and EGR's blanked, V8 Brake upgrade with Grooved, Drilled and Slotted Brakes, Halo Fog Lamps, Roof Rack, 240V Inverter, CB radio and finally a Swing away wheel carrier with Hi-Lift mount...

I asked exactly this question on Monday evening at the SCAM.....I have never been off-road in anything other than a manual (Land Rover or otherwise)
I refused to believe an auto would give me anything like the fine control of a manual, but have been assured by those that use an auto that it does indeed perform just as well......except...when you get stuck and need a rocking back-and-forth action in an attempt to get moving..."Better to remain silent and be thought a fool, than to speak out and remove all doubt" ?.....what rubbish...

The D4 automatic is great to drive off road providing you use the gearbox and don't just leave it in drive, not sure which D4 you have but the new 8 speed is great with the flappy paddles as you don't even need to take your hands of the wheel to change gear and like a manual can be very controllable If you get the chance see if you can get a half day at a Land Rover Experience centre, they will show you how capable and controllable the D4 is.Cheers Ian

Autos are better for off road. Regardless of the driver, autos are easier on the rest of the vehicle.17 Discovery 5 HSE Si6, Fuji White on brown | 07 LR3 SE 4.4 Java Black on Alpaca
