I may look like a mark or something because my "new" stealer is trying to tell me that the drain plug is not reuseable and wants to charge me for a new one with an oil change (V8 HSE). Anyone know the truth?"A lack of planning on your part does not constitute an emergency on my part"

GTR says that it is reuseable just the drain plug seal needs renewing
I'm about to change my own oil, and have no intention of buying a new plug. I'm sure I'm not the first to re-use one, and it seems very wasteful to throw away the old sump plug at each service. Is this just another Land Rover / Ford money spinning trick?Previously:

Too great a risk of stripping threads or rounding the plug if re-used. The plug is a sacrificial component, in as much as it is made with softer material than the sump, on the basis that replacing a stripped thread on the plug costs rather less than a new sump. For the sake of £3.00 I'd change the plug.I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.
So sorry CW, you posted whilst I was typing so I didn't see your reply. Was the really necessary?
ND - fair point - just seems a step backwards after not having to change the sump plug on all the other vehicles I've owned over the past 20 years.Previously:

or buy an oil pump that drains the oil via the dipstick tube
how many £3 would I need for one of those then?I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.
I just got an oil syphon off ebay for £4.95, so 1.65 Previously:

Didn't realise they were so cheap. Right, off to ebay..... I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.

Originally the washer was available seperately from Landrover, but was modified to the sump plug inc rubber washer.
The threads can become poor, so would suggest renewal, but if you really want, the aftermaket companies can supply just the rubber washer, used on later Fords.
10fc, As regards the suction pump from the dipstick tube, I have had limited success with getting the full quantity of oil out this way. On the next couple of Disco3's I'll measure the quantities from each method (draining & suction & see).
