After recently replacing all front suspension components inc track rods and the arms that bolt into the steering rack I still have vauge steering mainly when going in a straight line, all tyres are less than 6months old and in top Nic, steering is light with no knocking whilst driving, I have just jacked the front of the car and got both wheels dangling and if I hold the steering wheel tight my lad holding a front wheel at 9-3 can move it and then there is a slight knocking sound and the steering wheel is rock solid this is with the engine off l, if I start the engine and he holds the wheel solid there is about 10-20mm movement left to right in the steering wheel, am I looking at lower steering column or a new rack,Range Rover Westminster 4.4 TDV8 what a car

hi mate
did u get 4 x wheel alignment done as you’ve replaced the front lower wishbone , not sure ref the steering rack as i’m not experienced enough with regards to the D3 , ie in how ur able to test the ujs for excessive play and what’s an acceptable allowance

wonder if whilst looking at the steering ujs inside the vehicle ur able to move the steering wheel at the same time to see how much movement you’ve got on them
sounds daft if u put it into access mode and grab the wheel from the top and rock the wheel do u get any movement

Thanks for the links I’ve read the first one, my steering is very smooth no noticeable knocking but I do get knocking on very rough paths it’s worse when cruising on the m way it feels loose and I seem to be constantly correcting it and I can move be the wheel 10mm to the left then 10mm to the right with no noticeable movement from the straightRange Rover Westminster 4.4 TDV8 what a car

Interesting, I have experienced similar. around 9 months ago I had new front lower ball joints, steering arms and track rod ends replaced, along with a 4 wheel alignment. However the car was still twitchy on the corners. I eventually found knackered bushes in one of the rear upper arms, replaced both sides and the twitchiness is now much improved (I have yet to get the alignment done again).
However there still feels like there is a little slack in the steering, and I can feel a rattle over the bumps etc. Not got to the bottom of that yet, but car did get through the MOT recently with no identified issues.Not such a Disco Newbie now!

Replacing the UJ on mine stopped a slight knock and rotary play in steering wheel. It was also tight but have had the first two symptoms only on a previous D3.
All bushes seem good top ones are genuine and no amount of rockets ninths wheel makes them budge but the wheel will move slightly even if the steeeing wheel is held solid I think I will get it up on axle stands lock the steering and get my mad to move the wheel and see if I can see if the lower shaft knuckle is worn enough to cause the issue I’m on 220k so it’s dobe some work, is there any way to check the steering rack for playRange Rover Westminster 4.4 TDV8 what a car

On the steering column there is a clamp joint, this has to be undone when the lower shaft is replaced, check that it is tight with no play, many lower columns have been scrapped needlessly because this is loose, when checking for steering play get your mad to gently rock the steering wheel 5/10mm holding it with finger and thumb while you look for the movement It can when others can't,

There are two clamps actually one about half way down the steering column under where the spare battery fits, just follow the steering column down and the other where it connects onto the steering rack at the bottom, this is accessed from the wheel arch in off road height. There's no need to have the engine running to check these in fact it's easier without.It can when others can't,
