oil & filter change at 1500 miles
Guys - my common sense tells me its still not a bad idea to change the oil and filter after 1500 miles from new - any views as to suggest otherwise?
There's no mention of this in the now cut down service booklet, that just says first service at 16k- (why no service stamps section - I know LR say its all on line, but thats only any good if you stick to using main dealers.)
Cheers

If so it might be prudent to refill with the same oil.
From new I have changed oil & filter at half the LR service interval; IMO low cost "insurance".

its what I'll call the "end of running in" oil change

I was told that this was sound advice in the 70s and 80s
but that these days it's not necessary on today's modern engines that are run in at the factory and kept lubed with synthetic oil.

It won't do any harm, but don't expect any benefit

I changed mine on the basis that oil is cheap and engines are expensive. It is also a good health-check whilst there is plenty meat on the warranty.
Resetting the service indicator is a necessity though, so don't skip that stage.

Hi Robbie, what's the thinking behind resetting the service indicator?
My thoughts would have been change the oil as an extra then let the normal service interval occur. My worry would be if the dealer sees the difference between the mileage and service interval and queries it. If you just changed the oil and used a genuine filter they would never know.IID PRO

That technique is just fine for a D3, but not a D4. If the oil is changed the service indicator has to be reset.

Hi Robbie - why?
I have a service plan with LR, and was just going to do this oil change for my own benefit, and leave the services on schedule for 16k miles.

Hi Al,
I'm not trying to talk you out of changing the oil - indeed, I recommend it. But the oil system is managed in the D4 where as the D3 was little more rustic.
DPF management drives the changes. To produce the temperatures required for regeneration it uses unburnt diesel as a fuel for an exothermic reaction together with a forced increase in exhaust gas temperature (injection profile and EGRs). To achieve this the fuel injection profile is modified at 2 points to add additional fuel to both retard combustion and then again to provide additional unburnt fuel to the DPF.
The negative side of this is that part of the unburnt and rather thin diesel fuel passes around the piston rings to dilute the engine oil in the sump below.
To avoid removing the essential level of lubrication from the oil the total volume of liquid in the sump (oil + diesel) is monitored and recorded (there is a little sonar pinger in the sump). This, combined with information on driving style, completed/not completed DPF cycles and some predictions hosted in the PCM can trigger a requirement for an additional oil change, if the vehicle believes it will not make the next service without damage. If this monitor and predict cycle is disturbed then the system does not have a clue.
A bit techie I know, but the simple answer is that they system needs to know what is happening with the oil.

Robbie, When I bought my D4 (with DPF) recently it'd been given an oil and filter change by the (non LR) dealer and the service indicator reset. Because I didn't know what oil type they had used I redid the oil and filter change after another 500 miles along with the diffs and TB. As the mileage was only 500 miles between the changes hopefully no need to reset the service indicator again?
thanks

Hi Robbie
isnt that then going to throw the next service interval schedule out though, as instead of being 16k, it would be 17.5k?

No, there is no issue having the service at the original point. As you say, this is just a bonus and the oil system will be reset again at the next dealer service. In my case I did an oil change at around 1,700 miles and a full dealer service at the 1 year point. By that time I had a total milage of around 12,000 miles.

Robbie - that works from a "date" boundry - but doesnt it still be out from a mileage perspective, as I will hit 16k miles before 1 year (9 to 10 months)

There is no problem getting your vehicle serviced at 16k either, just whatever comes first. I just used mine as an example.
