The only thing I am unsure of is will it give you a warning when you need to top up without having to interrogate the screen?

You won’t get a warning to top up, you must check manually.
If you get an oil warning, it’s probably too late

I'm a bit OCD on oil and check mine daily (from cold) before every morning start.
I know manual states from warm, wait 10 mins, level surface etc. but my thought pattern is as its (a) parked in exactly the same position every night (even though on a slope) and (b) has been left overnight, I have a consistent daily morning view that takes seconds.
Also check it when warm, level surface, 10+ mins etc. but not as regularly.
Probably a bit over the top but been doing it that way for years.

Mine is at the bottom of the range. Anyone got any suggestions for which top up sized bottle I should buy?D4 XS, gone, much loved, never forgotten

I don’t think you’re meant to put any in unless it asks for it.
If you check it as per the procedure and it says “OK”, then you shouldn’t top up. If you check and it says “add 0.5l”, then you should add 0.5l.
If you just add a bit here and there, I think it can confuse the monitoring system.
There is a procedure in the manual which describes how to add the oil as well.

The system uses a level sensor. You cannot confuse it by topping up. If you want to add half a litre go for it. It will reflect the change on the screen as you add it (give it a few minutes). I alway maintain mine at the max level but not overfilled.

The D4 system monitors for fluid volume increase over time, as well as decrease.
I think it’s best to only add oil when it asks for it

I am sure the monitoring actually measures the change in the level from which an algorithm calculates a volume. Surely keeping it topped up cannot confuse it ?

Robpenrose I have to disagree and will post up the logic for you this evening from the manual. It’s constantly assessing the level with a sump based sensor. I cannot remember if it’s ultrasonic or another technology.
It notes the change in fluid level very rapidly which you can watch as you add fluid to the engine. There is no algorithm at play other than to turn the electrical signal into a value to be displayed on the dashboard. While yes you can wait to top it up, it is more than capable of detecting randomly added fluid. It doesn’t have to be told it’s being topped up etc. You can also watch the level in the IIDTool both as raw and litre values and watch it change live when filling.
