Oil leak 5 litres in 5 minutes 5 litres out

hi all,

im hoping someone can give me some good news, i brought a disco 3 from auction online and went to collect last week.

there was no oil showing on the dipstick when i checked nor was there any oil lights on the dash.BCA had AA guys on site who put 5 litres of oil in.

i wanted to run it up to temp before travelling over 100 miles home, the engine sounded sweet when i drove it about 100 yds to where the tap was to top up the coolant. tbe turbo spooled up ok so i sat there with it ticking over.

heat strarted to come through the vents so i got out to check the water levels ect, it was at this point i seea big black puddle underneath the engine and see oil dripping like mad onto the floor.

i turned it off and was told it is sold as seen therefore nothing i can do. the AA man climed underneath (after moving it) and said the sump was fine and that it was running down the block on the nearside. he could see this cos there is no undertray on it

ive read some posts on here about the oil filter seal, but not seen any postes about losing this much oil in such short time and just from ticking over.

the disco is still on the BCA site, and its looking like i have no way of backing out of the purchase.

i know theres not much to go on but can anyone shed any light please as i have to now try to arrange recovery before going back up there.

thanks in advance

Does sound like the oil filter housing isn’t fitted correctly.

it didnt have an engine cover on it when i lifted the bonnet.

the oil filter area looked all dry, but have not looked thoroughly as i was not aware of any possibilities at the time.

are you suggesting that i change the filter and O rings first when i return ?

I wouldn’t say a lot but the wrong fitting of these is a common issue, easy enough to check. Remove engine cover and it’s a 32mm socket

Hi.
think if it was the oil filter it is because it has not been fitted correctly, so if it has "just" been changed it would lag out as not seated correctly.

if it had an oil/filter change 7k ago it would not have lasted that long Whistle

bit suspect if the water level needing fill up as well, may be wait for a more informed reply from the more knowledgeable Rolling Eyes

theres no traces of oil/water in the header tank or on the dipstick or oil filler cap, i would have said it took between 1/2 -1 litre of water top up.

With a leak that big it should be easy enough to find it get a big tywrap or welding rod and poke it down the side of the oil filter housing and see if the V in the engine is full of oil, if so then its around the filter and housing.
But Geoff. is your man down there to get it looked at.

Flack Thumbs Up

Or put it straight back in the next auction and take your loss/profit depending on the mood of the buying public on the day.
I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.
