Oil leak and bearings in the sump.
Hi guys. Recently bought my first disco 3 and I'm working through a list of issues (that seams to be ever growing 🤦🏻♂️😆).
The most annoying is a oil leak which appears to be coming from top end somewhere.
Iv checked round the oil filter housing and that looks dry and from underneath it appears to up past the turbo, but my local garage can't find anything. Is this a common leak area or anyone have a good idea of what it might be?
Also I replaced the sump pan over the weekend only to find some small bearings in it. The car does not seem to have any running issues, in guessing but could have been a previous repair? Anyone know what there from?
Any help would be much appreciated, thanks.

Needle rollers, might be from a previous oil pump. Or the current one!
As regards the oil leak check the bottom of the vee with a long probe, oil cooler can leak on these.yµ (idµ - eAµ) ψ=mψ

Brilliant, I'll check the cooler and vee when the weather picks up👍
Is there anyway of checking the oil pump to make sure it's in good working order or on its way out?
Any evidence of oil pump having been changed? If not, and it was my car & a keeper, I'd fit a new pump as a precaution.

They look like the needle rollers from the cam chains, if its had a Oil pump fail and the crankshaft has locked then that's how these break off, from the valves hitting the pistons.
As for the oil leak check both camshafts at the rear of the engine.
I would be thinking about rejection in the light of Flack's comment & all the above.
Good luck.

No bearings in the oil pump, just the gears.
Timing chain failure as Flack suggested. I'd have the cam caps checked to make sure they are all ok and more importantly, the correct ones as these are unique to each head. I've know people replace a broken cap with one from another head.Joe

Well done Flack / Oval, I wasn't sure about the pump but the cam chains is a good call. If the oil pump is of the later modified type then its likely to be OK. If on the other hand its the older original pump I'd be fitting one pronto if he's going to keep it. Tbh if it were me, I'd be moving her on, too many "known unknowns" Best of luck which ever way you go! yµ (idµ - eAµ) ψ=mψ

i think the order of events are :
Oil pump tensioner mount fails.
Pistons hit valves
Cams get pushed up
Those items you found break away from the lifters and end up in the sump.
Head is replaced.
Oil pump is replaced
So if the car has a warranty I wouldn't worry too much

Hi guys. I bought the car privately just before Christmas, with 168k on it. Full history with it but it is a replacement land rover service book with no actual receipts 🤔, it is wrote in it that its had cam belt and clutch done but can't remember off the top of my head what the mileage was. No mention of oil pump or timing chain tho. The car drives perfect other han a little rattle under load.

Sorry for the special moment I was having when I wrote, it's had cam belt but no mention of timing chain 🤦🏻♂️(was having a bad morning).
Iv been through the service book and if everything is true in the book it says...
Cambelts and pump @110k
Electric handbrake and sensor @150k
3 piece clutch and flywheel @162k.
