Oil level in 05 tdv6 auto gearbox |
|
I’m wondering about checking the oil level in my 2.7 diesel auto gearbox. The control sleeve was leaking so I drained the auto box. When I opened the fill plug first (oil was warm) oil started pouring out, not sure how much but I’d say it was well over a liter. I collected about 4 liters in total from the fill plug and then from the drain plug combined. I changed the sleeve and refilled the gearbox at the proper temperature and running it through the gears and it took 4 liters till it started to dribble out of the filler plug hole.
Why did it gush out of the filler plug when I first opened it? ,is it because it was warm?
If I want to check the level now, can it be done without losing the oil?

The oil level should be checked when the engine is running.
If you had removed the plug with the engine running, you wouldn't have lost much oil.
Add some!

The engine wasn’t running when I opened the fill plug firstly. The engine and gearbox were warm as I had been driving it an hour before I went to drain the gearbox.
I was expecting no oil to come out or a trickle to come out of the gearbox filler plug before I drained the gearbox. When it gushed out of the filler plug I thought it must have been overfilled 2years ago when Land Rover changed the gearbox filter and fluid. I was able to catch all the oil that came out and I put back in the same amount by filling the box , running the engine and changing up and down through the gears and topping up till it just reached the filler hole.
I’m just thinking now that before I went to drain the gearbox, the previous day I changed the radiator.
No oil came out of the pipes at the radiator for the gearbox cooler. I went for a short drive to check for leaks etc. I wonder did that cause a build up of air pressure or something.

When the car is not running the oil returns to the oil sump. Then the oil level exceeds the level plug. Totally opposite from a engine.
When just checking the level I start the engine, goes through the gears and let the car idle until it reaches about 50°C (I use a IR thermometer on the oil pipe).
Then top up the oil, and put back the plug before stopping the car.

That’s great news, so to check the oil the engine has to be running. I thought it was just for filling it. I was able to check the gearbox temperature with the Lynx Bluetooth obd that I got for Christmas. Much obliged for your help, you’ve put my mind to rest.
