Oil level ALWAYS unavailable
Hi,
I have owned my D4 for a few weeks now and cannot get an oil level reading. I have followed the correct method (warm engine, wait 10+ mins, ignition on, etc.) but always get oil level unavailable. I have tried parked on the drive, different car parks etc, engine cold, waiting 10 mins, 30 mins, an hour, several hours, overnight etc but still no reading. I don't get any fault lights or fault messages - just unavailable!! - any idea what is up??
I understand there is a short cut method with the bonnet up, click the cruise control to get a reading without having to wait - is there a way to do this as I haven't got cruise control!!

a!w,
To check the oil level you have to turn on the ignition without pressing the brake pedal, once the system has done a check using the 4 way controls on the right hand side of the steering wheel, hit the right arrow, there should be a system menu available and you will see show warnings, oil level etc. Using the same four way controls scroll down to check oil level, hit the right arrow and the oil level should show up on the in dash screen.
Apologies if you've already tried this!

Does this work on all D4s?
Fiddled about with the right hand steering wheel star a few times but don't seem to get any option about checking oil - its all door locking and follow me home lights.Last of the D4 HSE...

It is on all D4's apart from some of the very early commercials and GS's that had the 2.7 engine from the D3.
As previous post, press start (don't press brake), wait until the ignition goes through its check cycle, press OK button, tab down to the Service Info option, Press OK again, tab down to Oil level check (or whatever it is called) press OK and it should appear.
If you have the 2.7 Engine, back to the dip stick

Try this:
1. Car parked with engine switched off at least from 10 mins
2. Open the bonnet
3. with the driver door open (and the bonnet) switch on the car WITHOUT press the brake
4. wait the end of the electronic control
5. go to Maintenance menu -> oil level
6. press twice the cruise control "CANC" button (enter into workshop maintenance mode)
7. see what happen.......Discovery 5 tdv6 HSE Corris Gray Outback Engineering Limited Edition

It will work without doors or bonnet open and when it's stone cold straight away, however the correct procedure states the car should have been hot, then left to cool.
As above, it can only be done with the ignition on, so press button without pressing the brake

Still can't get a reading - just get 'Oil Level Unavailable'.
Is it possible to get into the workshop mode if I haven't got cruise control?
Do not start the engine, as Adam has posted, after the dash has done its checks, go into the menu, down to service, then oil level one press OK, cruise buttons not requiredAltox GSM FBH controller thread

Maintenance mode by pass the waiting time mandatory after the engine switch off. As suggested by the name it is useful when you change the oil, just filled you can check the level immediately....
It's clearly explained on the workshop manual.Discovery 5 tdv6 HSE Corris Gray Outback Engineering Limited Edition

Yes, I was just saying the he doesn't have to warm the car up or complete the maintenance procedure if the car is stone cold.
For example, if he got in the car first thing in the morning, wanted to do a quick check, all he would have to do is put ignition on, scroll to the service menu, and it will display the oil level immediately.. No cruise control button required.

This is interesting. My 2013 used to display the not available message. It would work eventually but was a right pita! I was told about this cc button trick, and it seemed to work.
Now my car always displays the oil level hot or cold, first try every time!
Does the trick leave the car in workshop oil check mode permanently?

No, not that I know. The trick should be related to the opening of the bonnet and the doorDiscovery 5 tdv6 HSE Corris Gray Outback Engineering Limited Edition
