Oil level critical message

Just going along the M25 yesterday, red warning “Oil level critical” flushed up. I stopped and checked for leaks, had seen no smoke and waited to check the oil level ( give me a Flippin’ dipstick any day!) and the level is on the top mark….
I had the GAP tool in the car, so plugged in and no faults.
Started up and the warning is gone.
Drove home, checked oil again and perfect….

Any previous form for this panic warning?

Well, I don’t see how you have an option. I too would have no confidence in your current situation.
If the electronic oil level sensor cannot be relied upon, you have 2 choices;
1. Replace it.
2. Provide an alternative manual solution.

Unfortunately with 2, you will continue to receive these alarming messages which may cause your heart to miss a beat.
I read in one thread the interesting solution of using a lawn trimmer line down the extraction tube as a dip stick. I think that is clever but if you are to do this properly, I would aim to disable the oil level sensor…. as I do not have systems flow diagram I am not sure how that will affect the other ecm managed systems.

Thanks for that. I did some digging on this fine forum and found this;

So, I will knock up a diy dipstick for today. Probably drain the oil and check how much comes out.
It appears it’s a sim off job for the sensor….Guess what that probably entails. Belts need doing soon, so I think it’ll be then that I do it.

It’s still in use! Thumbs Up
 It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

I tried the curtain wire, but I really can’t get it past 90cm down the tube. Tried everything, twisting, turning, lubing…oo-err.
I’ll look for a thinner nylon tube, I can picture it, just need to find it.

I've had the critical oil warning light twice, weirdly both on the same journey on a motorway, and at about the same time into the journey.

I suspect it's a sensor issue, but I figured I'd treat it as time to do an oil change and be certain so I can sleep at night.

I had the same issue on mine which I put down to oil dilution due to lots of short journeys. I changed the oil and filter and the message never came back.

Yes, I suppose critical could also mean too much, but don't know if that is possible with this message. When oil dilution occurs and the oil level has previously been showing full, the message overfilled shows up when you do an oil level check using the service menu option.
Perhaps the OP should check the oil level readout for this message.
