Hi everyone. My first post here. I have just bought a Discovery 3 2.7TDV6 HSE. It is in fabulous condition for its age and drives beautifully. It has clearly been well looked after and has done just 112,0000 miles. I am aware of the oil pump issues. My son, who has had several Land Rovers took a look at the oil pump on my car. As we expected, it has code 4R8Q-6609-AC stamped on it. The car was registered in March 2006, so my understanding is that unfortunately this is the oil pump prone to failure. Please correct me if I'm wrong here. I have booked the car in with a Land Rover specialist garage for a revised pump and all belts to be renewed in mid-October. My question is, between now and the oil pump etc. being replaced, is their anything I should be aware of as a sign of imminent pump failure (shearing off), or would there be no warning whatsoever? Is a gentle driving style likely to reduce the risk of failure, such as keeping engine revs down? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

A slow pull away from stationary is a good idea personally.

and ensure that the engine is totally warmed through before using more than nn RPM.
Others can recommend what nn should be - I aim for no more than 1,500 RPM.

Thanks for the helpful advice. I have now had an upgraded pump fitted by a highly
regarded Land Rover specialist garage. All belts, including the cambelt have also been changed. It's good to have piece of mind when driving the car that I've had everything done that can be done.

Hi Kevin. I'll PM you all the details. One other thing, I didn't ask which oil pump they fitted, but apparently they do lots of oil pump upgrades. The encouraging thing is that the oil pressure light goes out noticably quicker on starting than it did with the original AC serial number oil pump, that the car still had.π

When you talk about an oil pump upgrade is this a Land Rover upgraded part, or aftermarket?

I would imagine it the revised LR design post 2008, with more metal around the cambelt tensioner

There have been a few revisions, its a Ford part badged as LR and in some cases as OEM/generic.

Wow! How does one find the stamp on the pump? Am I correct in assuming that you need to remove the fan and timing belt cover to see this? Or is it somehow visible from below, with the alternator and starter still in place?
My "new" D3 claims to have had its timing belt done relatively recently and I'm inclined to trust that it was indeed done, so I'm not in a rush to prioritise another timing belt change. But I would like to know whether I am still on the original oil pump! Previously:
2010 FL2 TD4e GS
β93 Defender 110 200TDi CSW - still got this, non-runner on SORN.
β87 Defender 90 4 cyl Petrol
β83 110 CSW V8 - best ever!
Range Rover 2-door V8 (not sure of year - 4-speed box and vacuum diff switch)
Series III SWB Diesel

you can check the number without removing the timing cover, just because the belts were done doesn't mean they changed the pump as well.
A dealer wont change it as LR are still in denial that its even an issue, i did a friends belt and pump change recently (its 2nd) and it still had the original pump.
