Re: timing belt replacement - oil pump failure

It seems I am not alone. Two months after having out timing belt replaced, we have had the oil pump casing shear off in our 2007 LR Discovery 3 2.7L TDV6. We are looking at a very expensive job to replace engine
We have had it serviced at al requested intervals at LR service centre where we purchased vehicle.
It seems this is a common thread in this forum. Has anyone actually got LR to accept responsibility for this?
Who did the timing belt? LR ?

Just an update. And first of all i just want to thank every 1 here that has help me out with doing this fix
I've plenty more work to do with this monster machine. Just to let you all know I ended up fabricating the flywheel locking pin and I had a bit of 6mm stainless steel for the cam shaft locking pins.
I did all this work on the cheap as i thought i was after terminal engine damage after seeing the oil pump failure.
So I I did not install a new timing belt or tentioner or idleres.
As I was saying I was worried that there was a retched noise coming from the left side of the engine. It was like the engine was rattling like it had a bag of spanners in it. So 1500kms later I decideded to check it out. I dismatled the engine bay again for investigation. It turns out I was 2 teeth out on the left hand side camshaft. I took the chance and decided that my crankshaft was set as per my marks I had made when timing it the first time. The right hand cam shaft pin lined up and the left hand side did not. I was out by 2 teeth on the timing belt. anyway its all timed up now and going well. Its turns out i can dismantle and ajust the timing belt and reasemble timing case and the rest in 3hrs As I said I have a lot more work to do. so now i have the joy of having to replace the timing belt and all tensioners and idlers. And now I have an oil leek from the crank shaft seal I installed with the oil pump. I also have to do a rear wheel bearing to do. thanks again for this unreal comunity of disco nuts. I feel your painDicovery 3 (Rimini Red)

There are tricks with the crank pump seal.
1 use a genuine seal
2 you need to leave it for 6 hours after fitting.
3 push it in by a certain amount.
Use tool or socket of the seal size to push in.
Lucky you need to do cambelt anyway

Thanks Pete K. I'll try them few tips.I have read allot about this oil seal. Now I only hammered on the genuin oil seal I had as I was getting very impatient at the time. Does the seal need to be 1mm inside the oil pump or 1mm oitside of the oil pump.
Just added a few pictures of the process. You might notice the picture of the mirror showing the flywheel with 2 balancing holes in it.

The seal should be 1mm in from the edge of the pump casing, make sure when fitting it that you keep it square on to the crank, if you twist it to much it will leak.

1mm in past the housing. I'll get the right socket size for that or I might have to machine something for it. The quicker I do this the better. Just moved into a newly purchased house this week and swmbo is not impressed with the oil leak on the ground Dicovery 3 (Rimini Red)

Oil pump housing failure
Hi, bought 2.7 D3 last November, "yes timing belt has been replaced".
15 weeks, 3000 miles later felt like engine had been switched off from under me @ 30mph.
Investigations today, oil pump housing failure (old type), and yes the belt had been replaced, which was nice.
So shopping list - cam belt, crank bolt, oil pump, tensioner.
Can anyone advise best place to buy these?
Cheers for any tips/advice.

Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but it’s highly unlikely that there is not significant other damage to heads, valves, pistons, conrods etc.
Did you buy privately, or from the trade, what about warranty?
Good luck, & keep us posted please.

Private purchase I'm afraid, car had been well maintained, but as others have pointed out this often happens post a cam belt change, and if even the experts at LR state pump does not need to be replaced and they weren't aware of this forum, then no one to blame really, apart from poor design in the first place.
I notice some recall on the Aussie LR site, but unfortunately none here in Blighty.
Smashing article here on how to do the job, so roll up sleeves etc...
