I think there's a different between an alignment timing tool (which vary if manual or auto)
And a other jobbie which allows u to undo the crank bolt with massive force required

There is, and I toyed with buying the very expensive toothed locking device, but glad I didn't, because the drive plate (or flywheel) alignment tool is strong enough to hold it whilst undoing / tightening the crankshaft pulley bolt.....This is the kit I used. Thumbs Up

So are their dowels around the bolts holding the pump in?

How many?

As I recall, there aren't any dowels. Otherwise you would snap / bend them when you tightened the 4 bolts that go vertically up into the base of the pump from the sump....

I stand ready to be corrected... Embarassed

I see Jaguar do a tool to lock the crank.

It goes in where the alignment tool goes,
but has teeth on to grab the end of the flywheel

Be nice if a manufacture made some. Hint Hint !

Hi Pete

I’ve heard of some garages knocking the oil seals in 1mm in and not 1mm proud , I wondered why some have had issues after with leaking oil seals

Maybe they need a lesson how to do it properly Bow down

The correct LR tool for the oil seal does insert the oil seal 1mm inside the oil pump face, not 1mm proud. The old style oil pumps also did not have three ali tabs behind the seal to stop it going to far in.

Flack Thumbs Up

Hi flack

Doesn’t sound to good then if it’s suppose to be proud

Also imagine you’ve lost count of how many you’ve done

Am Still seriously impressed when u done the rear belt on my D3 in under an hour seeing many garages said the body had to come off Bow down

So with the new oil pumps, is it no longer possible to fit the crankshaft oil seal in too far? With the three tabs that sit behind that you've mentioned, do they ensure that the seal ends up in the correct place and no further? When fitting then do you just fit the seal in until it's pushing up against those three tabs?

The LR seal tool inserts the seal by 1mm, see below, I have this tool and its a must to make sure the seal is fitted correctly, many have used a socket and been lucky, but the tool ensures it in the correct amount and does not ram the seal against the ali tab stops.

Flack Thumbs Up
