I have noticed that the muffler pipes, which are on either side of the spare wheel, have surface rust on them. Not only does this not look great, does not look great, not only that, I am not sure if these are stainless steel and if not, the surface rust would accelerate the corrosion.
My question, can I lightly sand the rust off these pipes and paint them with high temp black spray paint. I have done that on my VW Toaureg in the past to hide the big ugly muffler, I would like to do the same for the LR3.

An interesting question 8)
I have always assumed that the whole exhaust system on a D3 is stainless steel 
But . . . if it is WHY the rust (mine is pretty much the same, patches of 'surface' rust here and there  Never get mad - get even !!
06 D3 now gone to family member and still going strong at 265k
previous vehicles:
04 D2 TD5 - (clocked 189k from new)
52 X-Trail 2.2 SVE
various euro boxes !

SS will rust/corrode ultimately? Also grade comes into play and an exhaust is in the realms of taking a serious hammering.
I've tarted up many an exhaust with heat resistant paint and it lasts reasonably well
