It may have just stored a low voltage fault. Either charge or replace the battery, and try it again.

You dont have to disconnect the battery to charge it up, but it is advisable to do so Thumbs Up

@Disco_Mikey,

Is there any special reason why it is advisable to disconnect the battery when charging? I was hoping to plug mine up to a CTEK as per this thread:

No you don't need to disconnect the battery when you are using a battery conditioner on it!

I'd like to know the reasons behind it being advisable, other than "one person said it so we're all going to say it"

Used my optimate on 4 different vehicles including my D3 without disconnecting the battery, and had no issues.

The reasons for disconnecting a battery when charging it are old BUT still valid if you have an old battery charger.

The old chargers (and some cheap new ones) were rectifier based whereas the new ones are switch mode power supplies which can be programmed with some intelligence. The old style were crudely voltage smoothed and had no voltage or current limitations beyond a capacitor really. These would damage the rectifiers in alternators and have even been known to damage sensitive stuff like radios etc.

New chargers like the CTEK are perfectly safe for use when connected to the car though.

Ok, to recap:

1. If you have an old fashioned or cheap rectifier type of Battery Charger, it is best to disconnect the battery because the voltage fluctuations can damage the sensitive electronic components of the Disco (basically it is more like a computer data centre than a Ford Anglia)

2. If you have a sexy modern battery charger such as the CTEK type then you do not need to disconnect the battery because the charger delivers a smoother, more stable and controlled voltage that will not damage the Disco's sensitive electronics.
