What do you need to know?

There is a little "unit"/"heater" that is set via the central infotainment either for a 1day, week or manual heat or cold setting.

Programme can only run heat, when the temperature is below 4 degrees I recall.

The unit then warms the engine and cab for a defined period or doesn't at all if the batter or fuel is low

The heat comes on if the external temp below 15 deg C. Above this temp it presumes you want to be cool and just runs the fans.

I didn't realise the fans would run only above 15...don't think its ever been hot enough to use that feature Rolling with laughter

<5 degrees is the critical number for the heating

No it isn't as 15 deg C really is the magic number.

As for the rest:

Quote:
The timed climate system utilises the auxiliary heater to pre-heat the engine to aid starting and also to heat the cabin interior when the engine is off.

The timed climate system provides a way of obtaining a more comfortable temperature in the passenger compartment at a pre-set time. If the external temperature is between +15°C (59°F) and -20°C (-4°F), then the passenger compartment is heated using the engine's auxiliary heater. If the external temperature is below -20°C (-4°F), the heat is automatically directed to the engine to assist engine starting. Once the engine has been heated sufficiently heat will be directed to enable cabin heating providing battery state of charge is sufficient.

If the temperature is greater than 15°C (59°F), then the cabin is ventilated by drawing in air from outside the vehicle to purge warm air and improve cabin comfort. The timed climate system operates without the engine running.

The timed climate system can be operated by either the touch screen or the remote handset.

Note: The timed climate system will not operate if the low fuel warning indicator is illuminated or the vehicle battery has a low charge.

Im sure I got 5 degrees from somewhere and although your right (I just checked Topix) there are a few posts on here that also say 5 degrees is when the heating kicks in...never mind

5 degrees is for the FBH to kick in automatically .. Nothing to do with timed climate

But only on a D3, the D4 temp is higher; 9 deg C from (my failing) memory.

Ignition on to speed up warming as the engine is allegedly too efficient to heat up properly etc

Mark you now have to practice your smug grin for when you go out to the car on a frosty morning and all your neighbours are frantically scraping their cars and yours is frost free and warm when you get in Whistle Laughing

I do a lot of very short journeys during the week (3 miles each way to the train station). Will park heating kill my battery if I turn it on? Should I attach a charger each evening?

In short - yes! My journeys are even shorter than yours, so I've got a CTEK MXS10 and their battery condition indicator hooked up to my AGM battery. If the light goes orange after the vehicle has shut down, then I connect the CTEK overnight.

How often you'll have to charge it will depend on the state of your battery. There are some excellent posts on here from Drivesafe and Robbie about how to look after your battery, so have a search for those.
