OK, I've been on the Lagavullin again, but my brain's not yet giving up and it's giving me grief by overrunning.
Amongst the whirling thoughts was the following conundrum which I thought I'd share with you.
I'm wondering whether parking on an icy slope could technically be problematic due to auto levelling. Mad? Undoubtedly, however when the car auto levels, it really only heads down. I know the wheelbase gets wider as it drops, so the question is:
If the car self levels and the wheels suddenly move, could this overcome the stationary friction and start your car sliding down a slope?
As such if you park on a slope on sheet ice, should you drop to access height before you stop to prevent self levelling and a slide into disaster? Dr. Ian Malcolm:
"Yeah, but your scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they didn't stop to think if they should."
Transgenic tomato anyone?

Best not to park on a slope with sheet ice in the first place I would have thought.
Your question is interesting though. A slight shift in the wheels could result in movement... but I imagine the very slight gradual movement would not really result in the D3 suddenly sliding down the hill.

Wheelbase is the distance between the centrelines of both axles. It is track that you should be referring to.
But in any case try to avoid parking on sheet ice unless it is pretty level. LeighW

Forgive me if this is obvious, but turning your wheels to that you would slide onto the curb is also sensible. D3 HSE MY05 Auto

i parked on my parents drive just before Christmas, applied the park brake and selected "P" - took my foot off the brake and the car just slipped down the drive
i was on a 3:1 slope though. ended up parking on the garden - and creating two deep ruts Duncan

Dunc, this summer, concrete a steel O-ring into their drive at the top, then you can winch yourself up next year. You know it's going to be bad again next year 'cos the met office says it's getting warmer... Dr. Ian Malcolm:

There's thoughtful; will save you the tongue-lashing from using your ground anchor in his drive Dr. Ian Malcolm:

Happened to me in a subaru, they have/had the handbrake on the front discs, when the discs cooled down it let go. I was sat having a cup of tea with an old dear I used to Ghillie for, when my Subaru went past the window.
She said " Was that your car dear"
I said "Yes it was"
She said "Would you like another cup of tea then"
Priceless
It ran into her gatepost by the way. Club Pie n Pea

My VW T4 campervan did this one Christmas Day at the Low Wood Hotel near Ambleside. We took the kids swimming and I realised that I had left something in the van. I went back out and the vehicle wasn't where I had left it. It had parked itself neatly in a privet hedge some 50ft away. Luckily, adjacent vehicles (Merc Es, BMW 5s, FFRR and other 'posh' vehicles more suited to the Low Wood's normal Christmas clientele) had neatly been circumvented as my van meandered it's way down the snow covered slope.
Needless to say, the van was relocated and parked ACROSS the slope and this is something I always to try to do now.
