I thought that live feed was something for cars on the Japanese market (to do with a thermostat or air conditioning?).

No you're not... I don't even like the OEM ones.

Most are way too bright and easy to hide behind if you're a motorcyclist or pedestrian. Plus it makes you look like an Audi driver, and we all know what they're like!

I thought that was the point, to make you MORE visible? Better to have someone saying "F*&$ Me, those lights are bright!" rather than " What the F*&$ was that?!?!?!?"

As for motorcyclists and pedestrians hiding behind them, I can't see (sic) that being the case at all. For a start given the width of an average motorcycle, the lights will be either side and whilst bright and potentially briefly "hiding" (insert sceptical smiley here) the bike, use of the mark 1 eyeball would detect said bike especially as attention had already been caught by the aforementioned lights, surely?

The pedestrian issue is a difficult one as one might reasonably assume that your average sane pedestrian would not be walking along the road in front of moving traffic as a rule. If crossing the road, the lower limbs would pass in front of the lights causing them to appear to flash and thereby again attracting attention.

As for looking like an Audi driver....................There is no defence on that one ! Rolling with laughter Rolling with laughter Rolling with laughter

It's because of glare and visual clutter. What none of the European studies have been able to measure is the overall effect when every car has them...? i.e.. none. How long will it be before motorcyclists start to demand 'flashing DRL's' in order to be more visible than cars???

The US are arguing about them now: http://www.motorists.org/drl/reasons-to-oppose

For years now, the same logic has been applied in the uk for road signs and markings. Have you seen the mess some of our towns are in? It's getting increasingly difficult to see what's important - and putting more yet signs or even yellow borders around things just makes it worse!

I think some of the statistics were compiled by the same people who did 'speed cameras'. (It'll be embarrassing if the road death toll drops significantly after 50% of them were turned off at the end of 2011?)

The point of DRLs IS that they are conspicuous though. as a motorcyclist of some experience, I always rode with at least my headlight on from the late 80s ! The more conspicuous ( word of the day for me! ) I was, the less likely it was that I would not be seen. Flashing DRLs? not sure about those. Have you seen how effective they are on bicycles? If they were on motorcycles they could be effective in reducing the car pulls out because he hasn't seen the bike coming type accidents. I am not anti car here by any means and any one concept is not going to cure all ills but we need to at least consider if not embrace moves that will make ALL road users safe surely?

You make a very good point regarding the obsession/fear of litigation regarding road signage and the confusion the new approach has caused.

I totally agree, as a motorcyclist you want to be more conspicuous than cars... which is my point! Thumbs Up

And a great point it is. Thumbs Up Couldn't agree more .... apart from the fact that DRLs make all vehicles more visible, period.

How can this be a bad thing? I get the biker thing, I really do but if all vehicles were fitted with these things then it's going to make for a safer environment for us road users. I agree about the road signs but perhaps this will "encourage" people to be more aware of their surroundings and spend less time in a haze of "I've passed my test, why should I make any attempt to maintain that (basic minimum standard to be allowed to drive unsupervised on the road) standard, let alone maybe try to improve it! I fear that the majority of issues on the roads can be traced back to driver error/complacency. Let us debate the pros and cons of new technologies by all means but let's not lose sight of the root cause of most collisions etc on the road. The fallible organic bit behind the wheel.

If you make 'everything' more visible doesn't that just raise the bar so that the vulnerable blend in to the visual noise?

I can't remember the last time my car got hit by a pedestrian... it's not my car that needs to be more visible! Laughing

(I have the same issue with people wearing Hi-Viz jackets when they don't need to - eventually they become worthless - (the jackets, not the people))

Very true when there is a lot of other traffic with the same tech about. But what about when there's NOT a lot of background visual "noise". Surely there is still a need to be visible in those situations too?

If it's the same as the D3 that plug is used for climate control functionality in Japanese spec vehicles. I think it links to an external air quality sensor and cycles the cabin recirculation.
