could this have been part of the wiring loom for the rear tow bar that has been dragged back, looks like its an electrical connector of some sort that seems to have lost the other part that plugs in to it, ie two ends of two sections connect at this point underneath and one section has fallen off
I would follow the other end if you can tomorrow, might then give you and indication where its coming from
In the meantime, I'll ask Chris Tarrant

Just cause you don't like some of the previous constructive comments doesn't mean they were not constructive I believe that every human has a finite number of heart-beats. I don't intend to waste any of mine running around doing exercises.

This is not an electrical connector- the fitting on the end is a quick release type used on the fuel tank vent and the fuel tank breather pipes. (I think someone has already suggested these) These 2 pipes run from the top of the tank up to the filler neck.
Maybe someone on this site has a parts catalogue picture to help, or go to your local parts dept and ask nicely to look at their pictures to give you some idea of where these pipes run.
good luck

I have put a picture of the tank into my gallery for you to see- your "thing" appears to be the end of part 1 or 3.
This has not appeared yet though- check later

It could be the drain pipe that drains spilt fuel from around the filler cap.In the Beginning there was nothing, which exploded.

It has been mentioned here that it might be a part of fueling system but I do not believe so as the pipe comes out of the vehicle body on the far left side and I would think that drainage from the right to the left across the whole car would be slightly exaggerated hmmm
I keep on investigating and once figured out will let you all know for sure

It is probably the overflow pipe from the filler, there is a hole below the fuel filler cap. The pipe is just jammed on the end and comes off easily then sits behind the wheel arch.“There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely gamesâ€
