If your gonna re tile it then DIY, its not too difficult to get a surface that can take tiles.
If you need a smooth straight finish then get someone else................

Whilst DIY plastering is never likley to end as smooth and straight as a Pro, yoiu can get reasonable results if you don't faff about with it once you've got it on the wall.
Although given that you'll be tiling over it anyway and I'm assuming that only part of the plaster has come off rather than the whole wall, you'll probably be fine.
A trick i learnt (I'm DIY, not Pro btw) was to add a bit of washing up liquid to the mix to stop it setting too quickly. Made a huge difference as you will no doubt find, you won't be as quick as a Pro, so need all the extra time you can get
The other tip, is that once it starts to go off, STOP, throw it away and mix some fresh, it's not worth the mess it will make if it's too stiff to go on smoothly.
I have had to re-plaster completely our Dining room and 2 & 1/2 Bedrooms and now have some of the landing/stairs to do. Seems to happen everytime we remove wallpaper, but then it is an old house and even has horsehair mixed in with the plaster
Mind you, I ended up borrowing a cement mixer to do the dining room Plaster as there was soooo much of it to do!
Good luck anyway Bodsys Brake Bible

Also, if you have to do a whole wall, a good cheat is to fix battens at derby-width intervals across the wall. Apply your base coat between them and smooth with the derby. Wait to dry, remove the battens, then fill in the gaps left behind. Once a finish coat is applied you'd never know you cheated! Andy
