Play in steering box Advice required please |
|
HI all, car has developed a rattle in front suspension so investigated last weekend. I started the week before actually by looking at the ARB bushes. I fitted the spacers to these and this did make a slight improvement but did not stop the annoying rattle when passing rough ground or caused a clonk when braking harshly at slow speed.
I got the car in the air and pulled the wheel from side to side to discover play side to side but not top to botttom. I looked at the steering tie rods and assumed that the ball joint on these had worn. I bought 2 new ones and started to strip car down to fit them. It was then I realised that the play was not in these but in the steering box itself! The shaft that comes out of the box and attaches to the steering arm was moving slightly up and down. (also a very small amount of fluid is being lost)
This is where I need advice please..
1) Is there any adjustment to remove the play in the box?
2) Are there parts that can be fitted to repair the wear in the box (seals etc)
3) Do I have to bite the bullet and fit a new one?
4) How big a job is it to fit and new box? Price of parts?
Many thanks in advance for your help

the side to side play and knockin when you brake will be the lower wishbones. how many miles has the car done? Current: D3 commercial
Past: but not forgotten D3 HSE x2, 5 TD5 disco2's, 1 200tdi disco1, 2 300tdi disco1 one of which was a commercial, Off roader with a rather large spec, ARB's and big travel suspension to name a few.

HI car has done 91k, however I am pretty sure that the play is in the rack as I could see the steering arm moving up and down once the gaiter had been removed !

dont doubt the play in the rack. Iv had the rod ends replaced on mine but to cure the knocks i changed lower wishbones, steering shaft, arb's and drop links. So no knocks now. Mine had done 90k when all this wa done
if its a metalic knock you get im pretty sure you will find it to be the lower arms. Current: D3 commercial
