Hello and welcome to the site.
You will find tons of info using the "search" function - plug in +performance +upgrade for example

Hi baben,
tried to search, but got mostly old posts.
What I wanted to know if there are some recent experiences and new and even better developments.

Why??
I've had a 'plug in' box on my D3 for 2 years now....easy to install....performance a lot 'stronger' and fuel economy a bit better if I drive like a nun
I have had remaps in the past and to be honest find the box avoids the problem of dealers updates that I had on my previous D3...
Installation took me about 20 mins....but dont do it with a hot engine...I have the blisters to prove it

if you re-run the search you will see a few threads discussing box versus remap.
In a nutshell - almost everyone says remap.
A box "fools" the ECU and fuelling; different pressures; rest of engine, diagnostics etc runs out of parameters.
A remap is just that - it takes into account all mapping criteria, not just power/torque increase.
(Very badly expressed as I am not the expert. But there is a lot of info captured in a few threads) The next American ex-pat that calls it a "truck" is going to find out what 2.7 tons feels like on their foot...
Club "yes, I too have had the EGR's replaced..."
Club "yes, I too have had the compressor replaced..."
Club "yes, I too once had the car at the dealer for a couple of weeks nearly 4 weeks over 4 weeks...5 weeks"
Club "yes, I too have had EPB failure..."
Club "yes, I too get mysterious bings and bongs..."

I had a top of the range Steinbauer powerbox installed (retails new at € 1500). In the beginning it worked fine, more power more mpg.
Lately I have been having strange ignition problems. Car simply won't start. Sometimes I kept my foot on the pedal for it to fire up. Sometimes I just had to wait a while, till last week it completely refused.
Diagnosed 6 faulty injectors which all needed replacing at a cost of €2300!!!
I am not 100% certain that the injector issue is caused by the Powerbox, but I have a strong feeling it does.
I have been warned and went ahead anyway becase Steinbauer is prety big and high tech company. But I really wish I hadn't done it.
GO FOR A PROPER ECU REMAP. CLUB ILLEGAL CAR WASHERS

Renton,
I know Steinbauer (previously known as PBox) had huge issues with TDV6 boxes causing wiring loom 'fires'....their boxes 'hold' the injectors open longer......because of this I opted for a fuel pressure box instead which has had no problems in over 2 years
I also know that some remappers ( bad english I know) simply raise the fuel pressure (like a pressure box) and increase the 'torque limit' by flowing more diesel when the injector opens (just the same as the Steinbauer box) so not sure if a remap is actually better or not....guess depends who you go to/know/trust/believe.
As a previous 'user' of a remap on a TDv6 i can honestly say that the 'plug in' box is a better solution for me given all number of times my dealer reflashed the ecu during services and warranty work.
They even reflashed my ecu when replacing a faulty washer bottle pump
All that glistens isnt gold

Are you sure Pete? I was told that Steinbauer also increases fuel pressure.
Anyway, at present I am not perceptive toward any power upgrade method. CLUB ILLEGAL CAR WASHERS

Renton,
They 'play' with injection modulation on the TDV6 which is the opening and closing time of the injectors and affect the overall amount of fuel flowing past the injector in any given combustion cycle
http://www.steinbauer.cc/neu/index.php?select_id=53
Incidentally, why did the injectors fail? Did LR say Steinbauer caused it? If they did 'go after' Steinbauer and if they simply said it was 'one of things' then I think LR should contribute to your repair bill, at the very least!!

Don't understand the plugin box bit.
Original question I thought was plug in versus professional re-map.
Which bracket does mine fit into?
I got the superchips-bluefin plug and play re-map as advertised on LRM.
I plugged the handheld unit they sent by post via cable into the diagnostics socket of the D3.
The unit then downloaded the required info from the ECU.
I then went to my bluefin on the laptop and uploaded the info via internet and usb cable.
Then went back to site with reference code and downloaded the changes into handheld.
Then back out to D3, plugged in the handheld and uploaded the new info to the ECU and it was as easy as that.
No box required at all and it is reversible if required. The handheld also acts a bit like a faultmate and can be used to diagnose and clear fault codes.
