Plummeting MPG

Hi, Need the collective advice of the forum. 55 plate D3 S manual, running around on 17" rims and Cooper Sts (after my Pirellis wore out!). Normally get 27.8 mpg as standard on BP normal diesel. MPG dropped to 24 ish over past month or so and when in for some accident repairs the turbo was replaced because the PC said there was a problem with it. Now getting 23mpg on ultimate if we try to drive very smoothly. I'll go and put 18" rims and new pirellis back on tomorrow but what do you all think is going on before i speak to the local LR service people?

Thanks, BP

I noticed a drop when putting on mtrs. Went from 28-30ish down to approx 24mpg. I knew there would be some change, but not as much as that.

My MPG has dropped while on the STs, that's what is worrying.

are the tyre pressures OK?
If the turbo has been replaced, it will also take the ECU time to adapt to the new components performance

I've noticed a drop to about 25MPG over the past few months with no change in tyres.

For myself, I put it down to being a bit less careful with the right foot as the car is no longer being treated with kid gloves. When new, I was regularly seeing 30+MPG but I was driving like a Grandad on a Sunday Shocked

I'm doing a heck of a lot more traffic light Gran Prix's than I was then Mr. Green Wink

The FBH will also affect MPG negatively, as will tyre wear

I thought that a recent Disco3 software download at LR dealers has resulted in reduced MPG on the trip computer because it is now provides a more realistic measurement than before.

My mpg drop seemed to coincide with a trip to the dealers, as well.

Or is this an urban myth?

Is the overall wheel/tyre diameter the same. This can have an effect on the accuracy of the mpg computer.

It's actually rolling circumference you need, but diameter is fine if measured across the wheel tyre, where it's not under load.

Running these tyres since last Autumn. It is the recent drop that is puzzling. Wondered if I've got something slowly failing (although we never had a noticable turbo failure).

Pressures checked weekly.

I'll persevere.

Have the dealer check the MAF sensor and the EGR system on the car.

Both components can fail 'over time' and this will be reflected in a falling mpg value.

On my last Volvo, I got this with a slowly seizing wheel bearing. No noise, no apparent pull to the side. Just plummeting MPG. When finally taken to garage, they couldn't rotate the wheel by hand... Embarassed

I have experienced exactly this BCP, an immediate drop in mpg from around 27 to 23 max (even on motorway cruising, using BP ultimate, and driving it like my Grandma would), and it coincided with a dealer visit / 1st service in Dec '06. It has been back twice since then, and I have asked them to investigate why this is. They haven't got a bl**dy clue. I'm beginning to wonder if they have put the wrong viscosity (ie more viscous) oil in engine, although this isn't obvious from looking at what's on the dipstick, and it is still on original road tyres, and no other possible reason that I can fathom. A mention was made on last visit to dealer of fault code 1299, which they say was cleared, but no other info given, and fuel consumption no better since. It's disappointing to say the least, I could almost be running a V8 at this rate. Big Cry
