bammmy, what are you trying to achieve/get back to and under what conditions (cold/short urban, twisty A roads, slow motorway, fast motorway, etc). Many, many peeps start driving these cars thinking they will get much better mpg than they actually get, and in the end they get the same as the rest of us. Sometimes peeps see a ridiculously high number on the trip comp, way higher than reality, and think they should be getting that all the time. Well it doesn't work like that. Expect, under ideal conditions & economical driving (60mph cruising on motorways) to get slightly under or slightly over 30mpg. My D4 has done that 95% of the last 16,500 miles and it's real average is 31.0 mpg.
Hi,
A great question, what am I typing to achieve? Looks like what many others have tried and unfortunately not been successful with.Whether this be a magic potion, Redex, Millers etc, the 2 stroke oil trick, premium fuel. So looking at all the information that’s on this site and all the others it looks like it’s not out there.
I’m not convinced about the 2 stroke in my D4 tank, so for piece of sanity will make use of the Costco fuel station around the corner, it’s premium fuel is the same price as normal at Tesco etc, and will occasionally throw in a carton of Redex.
All in I am happy with the time I’ve spent trying different ideas about seeing if there was a magic wand to reduce running costs, there isn’t, apart from not driving the car at all, so I will continue to drive the Discovery that I absolutely love to drive.
Thank you to all who took the time to contribute, and if anyone does find a magic potion let me know.

Unfortunately, magic potions to do not exist. Most are snake oil.
I’m averaging 14.6 L/100 km. Just filled up with ~65 L of 95E10 for €91.01.

That's 19.35mpg!! Impressive for a V8.
bammmy, good idea to keep a track of actual mpg with the likes of the RoadTrip app. It helps you see what cause & effect is, plus spotting problems like binding brakes, pretty common.

Got it to 12.4 L/100 km or so when driving 400 km non-stop and after having reset the IPC meters before leaving. At worst 15.1. If I drove only in downtown I’m sure it would be closer to 20 L/100 km.

Our D4 has 38500 miles on the clock. Normal usage is 31 mpg with no noticeable drop in winter. Our car only does journeys of 20+ miles.
During a trip to the Alps last year, with a full heavy car, including skies on top, we averaged 25 mpg on French motorways at cruising at the speed limit when weather permitted.
My 15 plate does 29MPG on a good day, whereas my old D3 managed low 30's. Anyway, I applied man maths and got a brand new smart car for work...no deposit and £110 a month, or 1 1/2 tanks of disco fuel
Boom- cheap motoringThe devil will find work for idle hands to do
I stole and I lied, and why? because you asked me to
I record my fuel use on the Road Trip fuel app. Since mid December the mpg I’m getting is 1-2mpg less.
This is almost certainly due to the additives in diesel fuel at this time year, which prevent waxing.
All our vans drop during the winter by 2 to 3mpg, put it down to longer warm up and the anti waxing agent, come the end of March it will improve again. D4 the same plus the use of the FBH.

Hi all,
OK I have just completed my trip to Scotland, the whole journey was Manchester to just North of Inverness, total mileage was 780, total fuel was 130 litres. Therefore the actual MPG was 27.
The car was heavy with holiday stuff, food and drinks etc, no caravan or roof rack. My tank was empty before it was filled with Costco premium diesel and filled refill for the trip home at a local type filling station. All told reasonably happy with the return, the car performed beautifully.
