Possible Glow Plug Problem

Hi

I have a HSE with 127k on clock.

Recently its started to take longer to start (keeping the key turned longer) and occasionally its really slow at responding on the throttle, to the point where coming out of a junction can be interesting!

Press the throttle deeper for some seconds and the car's rate of acceleration suddenly increasing to normal

Pressing full throttle immediately had no effect for 2 or 3 seconds of pause after which acceleration occurs.

UPDATE - this is now becoming a daily occurrence Big Cry accompanied by a juddering when it starts Big Cry Big Cry

EGR valves were replaced at 98k, wondering if its the glow plugs as today after waiting for the light to go out before starting, it briefly came on again. Is there a test I can do to confirm if it is the glow plugs or not?

If it is the glow plugs, does anyone know where the best place to go to get these replaced, I live near Altrincham/Warrington, Cheshire. I've heard all the horror stories about them being difficult to remove so any advice would be most welcome.

Thanks

I doubt its the GP's

What ambient temperature are you starting the car at? what temp does the dash say?

Do you have a multimeter?

On a COLD engine, remove the oil cap and plastic cover. Refit oil cap.
Find the black and brown 3 pin plugs ontop of the cam cover and unplug them.

The green wires going into the engine are the GP's.

Measure each one to battery -
If its a good GP you should get 1R (and beep on continuity test).

Be good to rule them in or out

Here is a guide

presumably this test is with ignition off - ie. purely a resistance test?

yes.

If most GP's measure good, you can also check for power on the yellow wires straight after ignition on.
DMM on DC volts 20

But you need to be quick and on a very cold engine.
A test lamp would be better.
Check a yellow wire on one side of engine and one of other side. (as there are 2 fuses/relays per bank)

Thanks Pete K

Ambient temperature is about 5 degrees or lower when it occurs.

Will test the plugs with a multimeter as you suggest.

If its not the plugs, any suggestions as to what else could it be?

Many thanks

Just to update you, took it to the dealer and they said the EGR valves needed replacing...these were only replaced at 98k....so really surprised - saying that I only do short journeys.

They also reset the FBH as this had stopped working due to low fuel on a couple of occasions. For the last couple of days however, now that the weather has turned colder, its excessively smoking to the point of embarrassment....I'm hoping this is going to stop after a few cycles.
