Power steering drive belt.

Had my first failure on the D3 that required recovery after 3.4yrs & 102k miles.

Pulling out of parking bay my steering went dead heavy and was straightening itself up.
It's so damn heavy it's difficult to fight!!
The battery light also came on - so thinking it was initially electronic, I switched off for a moment then re-started.
Problem still there.
Next thought was the belt that drives the power steering & alternator.
A quick look under the bonnet revealed bare pulleys - problem detected.
My questions are:
How often is this belt replaced - I know it's due on my next 105k service.
If so - why did it break permaturely?
As the vehicle is maintained by LR with LR parts [now out of warranty]- do I have an issue with them to replace FOC?
or
Would my wider rubber [295] have contributed to the premature failure?

Just thought, this could have been a bit nasty if it happened at speed on the A1.
As mentioned the steering straithtens up and is very difficult, near impossible to steer.
I imagine it was like driving with the steering lock on!
Bit of a lucky escape!

anyway - big problems getting another belt - see separate thread "Parts -Bl**dy Dealers"
