power steering problem

After a few intermittent stiff steering moments... to park ! decided it was time to look at the lower steering column.
Stripped out shaft UJ was slightly stiff in one direction although not as bad as I expected it to be. Ordered new from Dan at Duckworths and fitted.
Seemed like a fix and drove without issue for a few days and 50 miles ish. It now seems though as if the power steering has completely died. After the euphoria after changing the lower steering shaft and all seeming well, drove 20 miles today all good, parked up, went to leave, steering heavy and has remained so since.

With the car jacked up, the steering turns easily -no obvious tight spots, with engine running there is no notable difference - like the is no assistance at all.
Removed bottom bolt from steering shaft and pushed off rack. UJ feels good. I feel sure that if something was tight or binding I would struggle to turn the steering or at least feel it with engine off.
Really feels like no assistance at all
How can i check if pump is working? It certainly doesn't look easily accessible down there
Looking like it maybe a visit to the stealers

levels are good and no noises.
Can't see that I got anything wrong changing the steering column, fits one way and that's it
Will be phoning dealers in the morning to book it in Big Cry

Have removed reservoir and cleaned up filter, not very dirty but as it was off thought just as well. Pumped out as much fluid as possible and put back together. Topped up fluid, moved steering lock to lock many times, topped up fluid as required left to stand over night. No difference,
Drove to dealers, no difference apart from fuid level now dropped from max to just over min.
Spoke to dealers today.
Found no fault yesterday, drove on extended test drive 30 mile ish I believe, no problem found.
Left overnight night, no problem found this morning or on extended drive.
Discussed maybe fluid......agreed that they will change fluid again and check reservoir.
Test drive, leave overnight and see where we are tomorrow

Update for anyone reading this in the future.
Flushed through with 2 litres of fluid and new reservoir has been fitted.
Problem has not returned...so finger crossed
