Preventative maintenance above 130K miles

I've had my 2005 D3 TDV6, auto HSE for ten years now. It's covered a total of 130K miles, 75K of those in my ownership. In the last 5 years or so my annual mileage has dropped to about 4K. In terms of maintenance, I use a well respected LR specialist garage and prep company who have always done an excellent job of keeping me on the road. I also tackle some of the basic maintenance myself. As I've no intention of selling the car, in the last few years I've not stuck rigidly to the service schedule, but instead I've followed the advise of the garage I use. Sometimes they'll say something can be left for another year, based on my mileage, other times they'll say something really does need doing ASAP.

In my ten years with the car, I've had several things done ... 100K service (timing belt); regular engine oil, oil filter and fuel filter changes; EGR blanked (after problem); earth strap replaced (after breakdown); automatic gear shift selector replaced (went sloppy); brake pipes replaced; front and rear brake hoses and ferrules replaced; park brake shoes replaced; rain pipes from sun roof replaced (after leaking water into foot wells); engine sump replaced (due to corrosion); steering UJs replaced (after steering would not centre after cornering), etc. I'm sure there's more, but that's all that springs to mind without looking back through files.

Now, given that I love the car and have no desire to sell it or get something else, I want to keep it running until the end of my days if I can (and if the climate warriors allow me to). Realistically, that's probably another 20 years (and at current usage, probably another 80K miles). And so, what tips do forum users have for keeping high mileage LRs going?

Also, having not bothered with PPI claims before, I decided to put in a claim before it closed last year and I've just received £800, which I'd like to put to the car, but I'm undecided what to spend it on.

My glow plugs have gone and the car will not start if temperature reads 0 or below, so it's something that I should get done. However, the risks of broken plugs, means it's best to call in a specialist, and that's going to cost £800 at least. Not being able to start the car in low temperatures isn't that big a deal for me, as I rarely need to go out. And if I really need to, I can use the trick of heating the temperature sensor to get it going.

Auto transmission fluid and coolant should be replaced at 144K, so I'm wondering if it might be a good idea to get that out of way now. Gears still change smoothly.

Lower suspension arms are corroded, but not excessively weakened, and still go through the MOT. But they'll need doing eventually.

Diff and transfer box oil needs doing, but I can do that myself, and it's not that expensive.

I'm also tempted to get one of these iid tools with the money, but I suppose that's a bit of a luxury.

OK, then, so given my circumstances and what I've said about my car, what would you spend £800-£1000 on as preventative maintenance?

Thanks, Darren

Auto box flush and diff oils. Doesn’t sound like much else needs doing.

Unless there’s any advisories that need sorting before the next MOT.

Thanks G3Z. Auto box and diff fluid changes do seem like the sensible route. I've had all the advisories done from the last MOT, apart from the slight corrosion on the lower suspension arms, which the LR specialist garage I use felt didn't need attention yet.

I was really just trying to see if anyone else with high mileage D3s were finding particular faults developing around this mileage / age that I should be watching for.

Cheers, Darren

Get the underside sprayed in used engine oil and under seal mix.
My worry for my 192,000 mile D 3 which I love is if the electronics will last twenty years and if the underneath will rust out.
Spent £3,000 on it the last three months mostly on the high pressure fuel pump and a complete rest of the fuel supply system including the diesel tank and low pressure fuel pipe, fuel rail and sensors and various pipe work.......throw in a wheel bearing....
The car suits my lifestyle and dogs and it earns its keep.
Gearbox flush will be sensible before long I guess.
The D3 is good value for a comfy do it all go anywhere motor.

THIS!

LR's maintenance schedules are wrong. I know they say the auto fluid should be changed at 150K, but the fluid manufacturers say it should be changed at 120K. Worse still - ZF say the auto should be flushed at 80K.
As I've just discovered, merely draining and refilling the box is a waste of time since it retains 60% of the original fluid.

I don't see oil pump on the things the have been done, this is probably one of the most important things to check/replace, if that fails you can say good by to your engine, that will be very expensive.

Thanks for the additional replies. All helpful and much appreciated.

Discovery3ski: - I do worry about underside protection. On my '60s Classic Triumph I'm used to using Waxoyl protection, but I have a small scissor lift which makes life easy. With the D3, getting under the lump with axle stands is a bit of pain. I know there are specialist firms that'll do the job, but I imagine that's quite pricey! I'm interested in your used engine oil (which I have lots of) and under seal mix. What under seal do you use, and what proportion of mix are you going with?

Mike_A4: - Yes, Mike, I'm pretty much sold on the Mega type flush of autobox fluid. I know that a regular here offers the service. It'll be first on the list.

Gearmuncher: - Arrr, the dreaded oil pump. I've read some of the horror stories and in fact last time I was in with the specialist indie LR firm I use I mentioned it. They said that they were aware of the issues, but in all the D3's they'd worked on, many with higher mileage than mine, they'd never seen it first hand. Of course, I'd rather not buck that trend, so it is something for serious consideration, especially as it's an "end of" situation if it goes. It's really a case of do I get it done now, or leave it another 20k-30k and have it done with an early timing belt change, to save on labour costs. It's certainly a bit of Russian Roulette, but then it always is with cars, especially when you have limited funds like I do.

Lots to ponder here.
