Problem - Extra engine noise whilst moving?? |
|
Can you help identify a problem please?
Extra noise that is nearly as loud as the engine whilst moving. Sounds like a decellerating bus, stationary is fine even if gunning the engine. Performance is normal. No warning lights.
After nearly 5 yrs I know about the FBH and about cold starts - it aint that Fully warmed up car, done a long journey and still there, 2006MY, 65000miles done, no EGR blanks.
I have LRSelect warranty, LRassist, and most complete AA membership you can get so I am not going to let it get to breakdown point - but I do want to use it tomorrow. Also, my TFC service aint til 08th Jan.
I have searched EGR, turbo etc for 45 mins now and cant find the answer in the piles of helpfulness, maybe it is there somewhere.
Can anybody help please??
Many Thanks

Is it a whooshing noise? If so, could be turbo pipe split - stationary, you wont get much boost, so less pressure? Mark.

Yes i would also say turbo or intercooler pipe got a split. You need to twist them to find any splits.

Thats what I thought with my D3 and it turned out to be the exhaust manifold
a much more detailed description of the noise might help with the diagnosis. Duncan

Hmmnn, modern diesel bus on overrun? like the D3 whoosh when its cold but not as loud and definately not that.
Not ticking, not clicking, not clacking.
Manifold? - Hoses? going to check me pipes now then, (I have black nasty tape if reqd) ((not for the manifold obviously )) Captain Nick Medhurst would ask:

Cant find anything suspect stationary, all pipes etc fine. I will be taking it out soon so will see if I can describe the noise better
Cheers all
I hope that it is the turbo or manifold to get the warranty to pay up for nice new ones before it expires Captain Nick Medhurst would ask:

So, if it does not make the noise when stationary, is it a drive train noise? Could be a stone stuck in a brake, or the propshaft heatshield rubbing the rear prop. Mine did this once, it sounds really bad.

If you rev the engine while stationary does it still make the noise? Filming something somewhere...

The noise occurs under load only. Narrowed it down to exhaust or drivetrain but definately still within the engine bay area. It is a mystery. Captain Nick Medhurst would ask:

Did you notice any exhaust fumes coming off the engine bay when stationary or even entering the cabin thru the air con system (they smell like the fumes from old non-catalyst diesel engine. I had this symptom and it turned out being the crossover pipe which carries the exhaust gasses from the RH exhaust manifold to the turbocharger on the LH exhaust manifold. (It is located at the rear of the engine and is routed across the top of the transmissions bell housing).

possibly - but I would have thought that would happen after a good hour (or more) of motorway driving (a couple of use speak from experience...unfortunately... ). Doesn't seem to happen with slow driving / idle / revving when stationary. The next American ex-pat that calls it a "truck" is going to find out what 2.7 tons feels like on their foot...

When my intercooler was blocked, I don't recall the fan coming on any more than normal - I just got system faults and the engine shut down.
But its a possible - though if the noise is present from cold when moving, unlikely I'd have thought. Mark.

Been out in it again. All pipes seem fine. I think it is the viscous fan even though temperature needle was in the middle and the ext temperature was 8 degrees.
How can I disable the fan to make sure it is that, and if it is, how do I fix it please? Captain Nick Medhurst would ask:
