Gents - On holiday in france with a pal and when towing and going over 3k revs his D3 goes in safe mode until he stops and resets the engine. Anybody got any ideas what it could be?? Cheers Thumbs Up

Could be the turbo overboosting? Turning everything off and back on again will reset it

cheers

I also had the same problem towing but was able to avoid it by limiting myself to about 55 mph.
And it was the the turbo vane sticking issue. The turbo's hot end vanes will not switch into the high power configuration so the engine management goes into protection mode.
It needs a new turbo, so staring life with clean vane bearings etc. This will be protected by a change in software that avoids the issue by excising the turbo vanes at every start, thus hopefully keeping the level of carbon build up tolerable.

If you keep the "dicky" turbo running only within the lower power range you can use it day long without any consequential damage issues, so you can complete the trip without concerns albeit rather slowly. Just dont try overtaking a stream of lorries up hill on the Autoroute, or like me you will need a change of underwear as well as a new turbo!

How old was the car and at what mileage did this happen Ocsid?
Volvo XC60 - does all that the D4 should have done
Discovery HSE MY16 (good apart from the heating), now sold
Audi TT Roadster (wow)
MGB Roadster (owned since 1992)
Discovery 3 TDV6 HSE MY08
Saab 9-5 Aero 2002 (gone but not forgotten)

The Disco is a late 2006, 2007MY [ie, first batch of Euro 4 engines], the mileage was 13K and it was 19 months old when it happened.

Edit; If you have been clear of the issue and had the turbo cycling software update then possibly the turbo's vane actuating system is kept clean enough. Will be interesting to know if the incidence of this problem on older Discos has been much less since they introduced the software change?
