Proper use of parking brake

At the Land Rover Adventure, one thing they showed us is how to properly use the parking brake. Now, I had some concept of this and you probably do also, but it is interesting that they want us to do this all the time, not just when parking on a hill.

When parking, with the brakes applied, put the trans into N. Then apply the parking brake. Then lift off the brakes to let the vehicle rest on the parking brake. Then, slightly tap the brakes again and shift into P. (Will not shift into P unless brakes are applied).

The Land Rover guys want us to get into the habit of doing this each and every time we park the car. This prevents improper load being placed on the "P" pin or whatever it is that happens when you shift into P. Especially do this on hills, etc.

At the adventure, if someone made that loud "click" noise when shifting into Park, they literally came running over to warn the person.

I've been doing this ever since I got the Disco. It works beautifully, and becomes second nature very quickly. LR must be hot on this now as their service reps are telling everyone in sight Very Happy

Same as ANY other manual.

Oh.. and we get better MPG too Smile

I really do appreciate the condescending answers on this list about the manual. However, that procedure is not in my manual anywhere that I can find. The parkbrake description on page 185 doesn't say anything about releasing the foot brake in N to let the vehicle rest on the park brake rather than the transmission.

Furthermore, there are a few areas where the manual is wrong. For example, with regard to the lash points it says to use when towing the vehicle on a trailer. The ones in the manual are exactly the wrong ones to use. Lash points should be as low on the suspension as possible. It would be best to lash to the wheels, but the lower suspension arms will do. This allows the car to rock on its own suspension without putting extreme loads on the upper part of the vehicle. If you lash to the Land Rover recommended points, each time the vehicle rocks, those points absorb a very high amount of stress.

I think they're referring to the manual gearbox as opposed to the automatic which is the only option in the US. Smile

Once we get the lads started, they go on don't they Twisted Evil . The reason America have auto's mainly is that everyone is late for work usually and they grab a coffee and burger at BM's and when your on the phone drinking coffee in the car on the way to work you just ain't got time to shift that lever.

As far as the 'P' position is concerned it is a little peg basically that slots into a hole. Only a very tiny thing and if it is forced or P is selected on the move it can easily sheer. Not a good idea to park in P only either on a hill. A lot of people slot into P just before completely stopping and the car rocks for a second back and forwards, ideal to fracture the pin. Oh ok! I thought you were saying "look in your manual, you dumbass!"

I would prefer a manual transmission on every vehicle except the LR3. There is just no way to drive offroad precisely with a manual. You would end up bouncing over things you want to gently glide over.

jzk, sorry I really must disagree whole heartidly there. Sad because the D3 (LR3) has a fantastic system, that when off roading the clutch is the last thing you touch once rolling.

For anyone with a manual gear box try this, it is lesson 2: Remember the first?

Park on a hill, a steep one facing down hill. Place the vehicle in low range and reverse. Put your foot on the foot brake and release the parking brake. Let out the clutch gently until you can let go of the brake. Let the clutch fully out WITHOUT TOUCHING THE GAS (trust me) and then the vehicle will move off backwards. Once moving, put your foot on the foot brake gently at first, then add more pressure KEEP YOUR FOOT OFF THE GAS and CLUTCH. Even on a uphill slope, you will nearly have to stand on the footbrake before the car stalls. Now let the brake off suddenly and the car will settle its revs and continue backwards at a moderate controllable speed.It will give great control, more than an automatic. You have to understand the original concept of 4x4 Land Rover to understand the non auto box.

Too many people ride the clutch in a manual, this is a very bad thing in a D3 for control.
