| Push Button Start Question |

Once a D4 has been accessed using the remote, is it possible to walk away with the remote and someone else jump in and press the button to start it or does the remote have to be in real close proximity to allow start up?

My experience so far is that it won't fire up unless the fob is in the car. We have a front door key on our bunch and if SWMBO is locking the front door and I'm in the D4 I can't start until she physically carries the fob literally into the car.

Bill is right, the smart key has to be inside the car. If you put it on the wing mirror with the window open, it still won't start.

if you start the car with the fob inside the car can you just drive away without it if you give to someone else  ?

Once the car is running you can remove the key from inside the car and the engine will continue to run and can be driven away. However as soon as the key is no longer detected a message is displayed on the dash 'Smart Key Not Found'

and if you then stop the car you can't start it again until the key is back in the car...............

I was told on a Land Rover event recently that if the smart key was removed from the vehicle once it was started the only way the engine would stop was if it ran out of fuel or the key was taken back to the vehicle "Never keep up with the Joneses. Drag'em down to your level. It's cheaper".

If you start the car and take the fob out, doesn't the steering lock re-engage? I had assumed there must be some safeguard against a muppet like me starting the car, leaving the key in the house and then driving off.

No, the steering lock doesn't come on either! Whilst I agree that it isn't entirely muppet proof, the overall concept is more secure than a key in the ignition solution.

What if the tailgate is open and you're loading up the boot.
Can some scum jump in, fire it up and be off with it ?
Or is the fob too far away ? 🏴

if you are outside loading it up and the fob is in your pocket then it won't be inside the car.
I had lots of reservations about this keyless entry thing when we first bought the car but it really is very sophisticated.
For instance, one time we went to a gig and SWMBO had the other smart key in her handbag. We locked her handbag in the boot of the car. The system recognised that there was 1 key inside and 1 key outside so allowed the vehicle to be locked and would not let SWMBO open it, only me with the key in my pocket.
