Question about the right tyre for the job

I am new to "offroading" with my D3 and I am now looking for more suitable tires for the job. I have 5 new BFG's 265/65/18 from my Disco 2 but after fitment onto my D3 the sprewheel does not fit into the well. My local TWT dealer suggests the General Grabber AT2. Any thoughts from the more experienced? I also see Kingsley has Coopers fitted to his D3 in the Leisure Wheels article?

Try deflating the spare a bit before cranking it into the spare wheel well. It should fit. Then just carry a compressor around with you Thumbs Up

As far as I know these BFG's should fit - TRY AGAIN

Your 265/65/18 BFG's are 25 mm bigger in diameter than
the stock tire. Hence the tight fit in the spare carrier, others
also have bigger wheels with the same problem and just
lever them out.
 D3 bullbar-spots-roof rack with spots-ladder-long range tank-swing out spare wheel carrier- upgraded tow bar-dash console-internal water tank-duel awnings-drawer system & T T.

dduring - deflate the spare, insert it and then inflate it to 3.5, leave it for a couple of days and then deflate to 2.5 - it should fall out then - it worked for me

TYRES

I'm looking at fitting General Grabber AT2s this weekend 255/60/18. Could someone perhaps give me the heads up on them on / off road. My D3 has GoodYear Wranglers on which look like they will be as much use as a paper ashtray offroad.

Happy with my AT2's to date 15 000 km's - quite a bit of Off Road driving mainly rocks and some mud and water but no soft sand yet so cant comment on the soft sand performance. They are showing some signs of sidewall abuse but then again they have encountered some serious rocks.

They have done the job to date in some extreme conditions. Looking at tread used I hope to get 50 000km's out of them and this seems to have been achieved by some other users on a local forum.

I have 245/75R17 BFG AT fitted to 17" rims. The radius of this setup is around 400mm compared to the 380mm of the standard 255/60R18 spec for the D3. An increase in ground clearance of 20mm! Completed 47k with around 10mm tread still left. Expect to do around 90k. Very happy with the performance both on road and off road (sand, rock and mud). Noise level on road is slightly higher that the standard tyres but then the standard tyres are not really suited to playing off road.

Thanks for the replies

An actuary mentioned to me to make sure that whatever tyres I fit are within the manufacturers specifications especially speed and load ratings to ensure no hassles should one need to claim against an insurance policy.

Will keep you updated to my experience.
Please be aware that various fitment centres around Sandton, Midrand, Pretoria have advised that they are currently struggling to get stock - seems as though it has something to do with manufacturers operating on a JIT policy during the recession.

AT2s

I changed from Scorpions to AT2s to drive up from Uganda to Sudan via Kenya and Ethiopia. The AT2s were awesome in mud in northern Kenya. I am quite sure the Pirellis would have stuck. The AT2s look like they will last forever and no punctures yet- unlike the Pirelli's which are made fro european motorways. At last a really good tyre for Africa. Very Happy
